SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – The Rocky Mountain College women's soccer team saw its trip to the Cascade Collegiate Conference Tournament come to a stunning end as they fell to College of Idaho in penalties on Friday night in the quarterfinals.
Â
The teams played to a scoreless draw officially, but Rocky (13-3-1) was eliminated for the tournament after College of Idaho (7-8-2) won the shootout, 3-2. The Battlin' Bears led 2-1 after three kicks, but missed the next two as the Yotes put two in.
Â
Rocky had chances to win before the shootout as they had a 17-11 edge in shots with eight of those chances on goal. The most dangerous chance came in the 110th minute when
Hannah Borgel hit the crossbar from 40 yards out.
Â
C of I's best chance came in the 35th minute when Katelyn Benavidez had a penalty kick turned away by the Rocky keeper,
Maia Wetzel.
Â
Lauryn Gamache, the CCC Offensive Player of the Year, led Rocky with five shots and three shots on goal.
Sami Heimer had four shots and Borgel took three.
Â
Wetzel made four saves and earned her fifth shutout.
Â
Rocky will now have to wait and see if a second-place finish in the regular season will be good enough for an at-large invite to the NAIA National Championships. That field of 32 will be announced on November 13.
