Rocky Women Suffer First Loss on Saturday at Providence

GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The Rocky Mountain College women's basketball team had its six-game winning streak to start the season snapped in a 0-52 loss at the University of Providence on Saturday night at the McLaughlin Center.
 
Rocky (6-1, 1-1 Frontier) used an 11-4 run in the opening quarter to help them to a 17-11 lead after 10 minutes. The Battlin' Bears stayed ahead until the third quarter – including a nine-point advantage at one point – before Providence (10-1, 1-0) took a 44-43 lead into the final quarter.
 
A pair of Brooke Jones free throws early in the fourth put Rocky back in the lead 45-44, but the Argos scored the game's next five points and never trailed again. Alecia Chamberlin scored with 4:56 to play to get Rocky within 51-49 before Providence closed out the win with six straight points.
 
It was a tough shooting night for the Battlin' Bears as they hit on just 26.8 percent from the field. Rocky finished 4 of 16 from 3-point land and had just five assists and 12 turnovers. They scored 18 points in the paint and grabbed 38 rebounds.
 
Mikayla Jones led the team with 20 points. Her second straight 20-point outing came on 5 of 14 shooting while making eight of her nine attempts from the foul line.
 
Providence shot 39.7 percent and overcame a 2 of 13 night from beyond the arc by scoring 11 points from 13 offensive rebounds. Rocky forced 11 Argos' turnovers and turned them into nine points.
 
Brooke Jones scored nine points and led the Battlin' Bears with eight rebounds. Chamberlin scored seven points with six boards.
 
Providence got a game-high 22 points from Stephanie McDonagh.
 
The Battlin' Bears will be back in action on Friday when they make the trip across town to face MSU Billings at 7:30 p.m. at Alterowitz Gymnasium.
