Rocky Stuns Mary in Opener

BILLINGS, Mont. – The Rocky Mountain College women's soccer team scored twice in under three minutes to stun University of Mary (N.D.) 3-2 in overtime on Monday evening at Wendy's Field.

Rocky Mountain (1-0) trailed as the game entered the 90th minute when Rita Marshall won possession from a Mary defender and put a shot just over the diving keeper to level the match at 2-2 and force overtime.

In the second minute of the extra period, Tiara Duford intercepted a clearing attempt and delivered a shot into the upper left of the goal for the season opening victory. The goal was the second of the day for Duford as the freshman tapped in a cross from Marshall in the ninth minute for a 1-0 lead.

Mary – playing the game as an exhibition – pulled the game even at 1-1 in the 26th minute when Elizabeth Patterson headed home a corner kick from Jade Smith. The Marauders took a 2-1 lead in the 48th minute with a goal from Caylin Cathey.

Each team attempted 10 shots in the contest with the Battlin' Bears putting six of those shots on goal. Marshall led the team with three shots while Duford and Sami Heimer notched two shots apiece.

Maia Wetzel earned her first career victory in goal with six saves for Rocky.

The Bears are now off to northern California where they will play three times over the weekend. The busy trip begins on Friday with a 5 p.m. MT contest at Menlo (Calif.) in Atherton.
