LEWISTON, Idaho – The Rocky Mountain College volleyball team opened its four-match road stretch with a sweep of Lewis-Clark State College on Friday night in Frontier Conference action.
Rocky Mountain (12-5, 2-0 Frontier) won the match by scores of 25-18, 25-12, 25-20.
Rocky had the offense going on Friday as the Battlin' Bears totaled 47 kills and hit .306. It was just the second time in the past 10 matches they had been above .300 hitting in a match.
Rocky bolstered the kill total with a stellar 18 kills in the second set. The team had twice as many kills as Lewis-Clark State (5-9, 0-3 Frontier) in the set and they hit .417. That kill advantage helped them to a 47-35 lead in the match.
Sydney Matheny led the Battlin' Bears with a season-high 13 kills, three shy of her career-best set during the 2015 season. Matheny had zero hitting errors and hit .565 in the win. She also recorded four digs and three blocks.
Daniella Russell added 11 kills and .321 hitting for Rocky. This is her seventh double-digit kill effort of the season and her best hitting efficiency in those matches.
Rocky posted a 68-56 edge in digs and had a 4-3 lead in service aces. They held the Warriors to .129 hitting and tallied six blocks.
Three Rocky players had double figures in digs led by 14 apiece from
Hailey Copinga and
Natalie Hilderman.
Holland Fergurson had 12.
Hilderman finished with 34 assists for her 10th double-double of the season.
LC State was led by 11 kills from Rachel Gregg.
The Battlin' Bears will now head to Butte, Mont. for a match at Montana Tech on Saturday at 7 p.m.
