HELENA, Mont. – The No. 15 Rocky Mountain College football team (6-2, 5-2 FC) took down Carroll College (3-5, 2-5 FC) 42-21 Saturday afternoon.
With today's victory, the Battlin' Bears pulled in their fourth win in a row as they draw within reach of the top of the Frontier Conference.
Rocky opened the game with first drive leading to a score.
Jacob Bakken found
Cody McCombs for a nine yard touchdown pass. The Fighting Saints replied with a scoring drive of their own as Major Ali rushed into the end zone from eight yards out.
The next drive,
Max Gray pulled off a 67 yard gain off a Bakken pass. The Battlin' Bears capitalized on the opportunity as Bakken found
Darneail Jenkins for a 10 yard touchdown pass. Rocky intercepted Carroll's Kolby Killoy to halt Carroll's attempt at a response. Bakken and
Derrick Olsen made the most of the chance with a 20 yard touchdown pass.
An eventful first quarter put the Battlin' Bears up 21-7 over the Fighting Saints.
During the second quarter, Rocky's
Ty Reynolds forced Carroll's Ali to fumble within scoring range.
Ryder Rice recovered the ball.
Drew Korf came on to the field to immediately rush 20 yards for a touchdown.
Sam Sparks scored next with a 6 yard rushing touchdown.
With two seconds left in the quarter and down by 28, Carroll's Killoy found Eric Dawson for a 30 yard touchdown pass.
The first half ended with Rocky on top of Carroll 35-14.
Carroll drew within 14 points of Rocky in the third quarter with Killoy's touchdown pass to Tony Collins. However, that would be the last score for the Fighting Saints.
With five minutes left in the fourth quarter, Rocky would wrap up the game with a 3 yard rushing touchdown from Bakken.
The Battlin' Bears topped the Saints 42-21.
For the fourth time this season, Bakken threw for over three hundred yards. He threw for 355 yards and three touchdowns and no interceptions with an additional rushing touchdown.
Gray led Rocky in receptions with seven caught passes and 126 yards. Jenkins had five receptions for 79 yards and a touchdown.
Sparks gained 102 yards and a touchdown on the ground to lead the Battlin' Bears in rushing.
Chase Bertelsen proved a force on defense with 10 tackles and one sack. Reynolds and Rice both forced fumbles.
Kendell Jefferson pulled in an interception and blocked a field goal.
The Battlin' Bears will host Montana Western next Saturday. A victory over the Bulldogs would avenge Rocky's loss in September, but more importantly would push the Battlin' Bears to the top of the Frontier Conference.
The game will start at 1 p.m at Herb Klindt Field.
