Rocky Men’s Basketball Heads South for the Cactus Classic Against a Trio of GSAC Opponents

CHANDLER, Ariz. Dec. 14, 2022- Rocky Men's Basketball (6-3) will travel to Chandler, Arizona for the 2022 Cactus Classic starting on Friday. A full tournament schedule, as well as live stream and live stats links for every game in the tournament can be found HERE.

Battlin' Bears Recap: The Battlin' Bears men are coming off of a thrilling overtime victory in their exhibition matchup against MSU Billings last Saturday. Kael Robinson, the Battlin' Bears leading scorer this season averaging 13.8 points per game, played every minute of the game against MSUB, finishing with 18 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Robinson eventually came through with the defensive play of the season so far, pinning a potential go-ahead layup attempt by the Yellowjackets against the backboard with four seconds left. Elliott Brooks came up with multiple winning plays throughout the game coming off the bench, most notably hitting a three pointer on the first possession of overtime through getting fouled for a four point play, then another three pointer later to extend Rocky's lead to four in the period. Brooks' currently averages 56.1 % from three point range on the season, which ranks him 15th in the nation. No other player above Brooks in percentage shoots more than 3.0 three pointers a game on average, while Brooks averages 4.6 three pointers a game, hitting 2.6 per game this season.

Scouting the Spirit: OUAZ has begun their season 6-4, beginning 2-3 in GSAC conference play. The Spirit's most notable win was an overtime victory against The Master's in their conference play opener. Ottawa came up just short in a comeback effort against No. 1 ranked Arizona Christian, holding the lead with 20 seconds left, before Arizona Christian hit back to back layups to give them a last second victory. 

The Spirit are led by senior forward Josiah De'laCerda (15.8 ppg, 8.7 rpg, 1.7 bpg), sophomore guard Alex Villi (14.3 ppg, 42.4% 3pt %), and senior guard Kolten Hitt (10.4 ppg, 2.0 spg, 1.0 bpg). Ottawa has five players that average more than 10 points per game, including four of their five starters. Ottawa averages 83.7 points per game, while holding opponents to 76.6 points per game. 

The Spirit are coached by Matt Keeley in his fifth season at the helm.

Scouting the Oaks: Menlo College has begun their season 9-3, including 3-2 in GSAC conference play. The Oaks will come into the Cactus Classic off of an overtime loss against No. 15 ranked William Jessup. 

The Oaks are led by senior forward Corey Le'aupepe (14.3 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 58.2 fg%), junior forward Landon Seaman (13.8 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 67.7 fg%), and sophomore guard Patrick Ryan (13.6 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 3.1 apg). Menlo averages 79.8 points per game as a team, while holding opponents to 68.8 points per game. 

Menlo College is coached by Brendan Rooney in his third season.

 
Monday, December 19th vs Hope International University @ 12:00pm (MT)

Scouting the Royals: Hope International has begun their season 6-3, including 4-2 in GSAC conference play. The Royals come into the Cactus Classic after a 78-89 loss to The Master's University. Hope International received votes in the most recent NAIA Top 25 Coaches Poll. 

The Royals are led by junior forward Jalani Horn (16.7 ppg, 7.3 rpg, 2.8 spg), senior guard Charles Neal (16.3 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 3.4 apg, 1.7 spg) and junior guard Rasheet Wilson (12.9 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 4.1 apg, 1.8 spg). Hope International averages 82.0 points per game, while holding opponents to 77.4 points per game. 

Hope International is coached by Bill Czech in his 13th season.
