Rocky Men’s Basketball Defeats Montana Western 82-69

Defense provides the Battlin' Bears men a second half boost to overcome the Bulldogs Saturday afternoon.

BILLINGS, Mont.- Four Battlin' Bears scored in double figures as the Rocky men took an 82-69 victory over Montana Western Saturday afternoon.

Montana Western was red hot in the first half shooting 60% from the field, led by 15 first half points from Jamal Stephenson. The Battlin' Bears countered the hot shooting with 14-28 shooting from the field of their own, along with getting to the free throw line 13 times and hitting 11 of them, leading to a 43-43 tie at the half.

For the second game in a row, Rocky came out of the gates fast in the second half, as Beau Santistevan hit a three on the opening possession to give Rocky a three point lead. Both teams traded baskets for the opening four minutes of the half. After Maxim Stephens put a layup in at the 15:58 mark to tie the game at 58-58, the Battlin' Bears would never trail again. The next five minutes of game time would consist of an 11-2 run by Rocky giving them a lead that they would not give back, as the Battlin' Bears men went on a 20-6 run from the 9:27 mark until the final minute of play.

"This game had a lot of offense in the first half." Coach Bill Dreikosen said. "We talked about coming out in the second half and doing a better job defending them. I thought that the last seven minutes of the game our defensive stops really paid big dividends. We took a small lead and pushed it to double digits and that's what good teams do. Good win and now we need to have a good week as we prepare for the top two teams in the conference next week."

The Battlin' Bears were led by 25 points and nine rebounds from Maxim Stephens, 19 points, three rebounds, and three assists from Kael Robinson, and 11 points and eight assists from Jesse Owens.

The Bulldogs were led by 24 points and four assists from Jamal Stephenson and 10 points, three rebounds and three assists from Jok Jok.

The Battlin' Bears (11-11, 3-7 conf.) stay at home to take on University of Providence on Thursday evening.
