Rocky Football Falls Short 27-20 at #19 Montana Western

BILLINGS, Mont.- Rocky's fourth quarter comeback efforts fell just short in Dillon, losing 27-20 to #19 Montana Western.

The Battlin' Bears found the scoreboard on their first two drives, as Graedyn Buell took the reins of the offense on Saturday, driving the Battlin' Bears into Montana Western territory, leading to two early field goals from Austin Drake to give Rocky a 6-0 lead heading into the second quarter.

Montana Western flipped the momentum in the second quarter, as they scored 17 unanswered points heading into halftime to lead 17-6.

The defenses of both teams held their ground in the third quarter, the only points being on a Montana Western field goal, after running back Pete Gibson burst out for a 44 yard rush that got the Bulldogs into Rocky territory.

Things seemed grim for the Battlin' Bears, as early in the fourth quarter the Rocky offense found rhythm, as Graedyn Buell found Joseph Dwyer and Jack Waddell on back to back plays for over 20 yards each as Rocky found themselves inside the five yard line, but were unable to cash in, giving Western the ball right back on downs.

Two drives later, Pete Gibson broke free again for the Bulldogs, running 61 yards for a touchdown to extend the lead to 27-6 with 7:42 remaining.

Graedyn Buell and the offense didn't quit, answering for their first touchdown of the day after Buell found Joseph Dwyer from 31 yards out, after an impressive set of moves to escape multiple sack attempts to find his open receiver.

The first play of Western's next drive, Mason Browning got into the backfield, forcing and recovering a fumble to give the ball right back to the offense with 3:57 remaining. Buell used a mix of his arm and legs, pulling the Battlin' Bears deep into Western territory, but a false start penalty gave Rocky a third and long situation. After a short completion, the Battlin' Bears rushed to the line quickly, leading to Buell finding Dwyer again from 24 yards out to bring Rocky within one score.

Rocky would never get the ball back however, as Montana Western was able to secure the ensuing kickoff and get the first downs they needed to run the clock down to zeros.

Graedyn Buell finished his first start as a Battlin' Bear 26-for-39 for 311 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception. He was sacked six times on the day. Buell was also the leading rusher on the day, running 15 times for 33 yards total. Joseph Dwyer lead the Battlin' Bears again in receiving, grabbing four catches for 97 yards and two touchdowns. Jack Waddell and DeNiro Killian Jr. also pulled in seven catches each on the day.

Defensively, Wyatt Brusven tallied 11 total tackles on the day, while Mason Browning added 10 tackles along with his forced and recovered fumble. Ethan Hurst tallied two sacks on the day.

The Battlin' Bears (3-4) returns home to host #19 Montana Tech on Herb Klindt Field on Saturday, October 21st at 1:00pm (MT).
