Rocky Volleyball Rallies Past the Argos in Five Sets

BILLINGS, Mont.- Makenna Bushman tied her career high with 20 kills as the Battlin' Bears outlasted the Argos in five sets on Wednesday evening.

The first set was back and forth throughout the first set, as Rocky took an 18-17 lead after back-to-back kills from Makenna Bushman. Providence rallied back with three straight kills, taking a lead they wouldn't give up, winning 25-22 after they hit .326 as a team in the first set with only three attack errors.

The second set began back and forth, similar to the first set. The Battlin' Bears extended a lead after a four point rally, highlighted by two straight service aces from Madeline Gilder. After an Argo attack error gave Rocky a 23-20 lead, Providence put together a run that would give them a 24-23 lead after a kill from Martyna Fielder. A Rocky timeout gave them the plan they needed to respond with three straight points, as Rhiannon Nez stuffed an Argo attack, Madeline Gilder tallied her third service ace of the set, and freshman Kaitlyn Wood slammed a kill to knot the match at one set a piece.

A mid-set run from the Battlin' Bears defined the third set, as Makenna Bushman tallied five kills and a block as Rocky put together an 11-2 run to lead 21-11. Providence responded with a short run of their own, but the deficit was too much to overcome Rocky's .308 hitting in the third set, along with only two hitting errors.

A clean match overall saw both teams combine for 17 attack errors in another back and forth fourth set. The Argos had Rocky on the ropes after a service error granted them a 24-22 lead, but Bella Bryan responded with a kill and a block to bring Rocky back tied at 24-24. Providence put their heads down and forced a fifth set as Zoe Naugle tallied a solo block to secure a 26-24 victory.

The Battlin' Bears were not shaken by the fifth set, as they grabbed an early 7-3 lead in the deciding set. Makenna Bushman led the way in the final set, as her match-sealing kill was the 20th of the night and the fifth of the fifth set to give the Battlin' Bears an important conference victory.

Bushman tied her career high with 20 kills on .283 hitting percentage. Rhiannon Nez tallied 13 kills (.294%) along with six total blocks. Bella Bryan finished with 11 kills and nine digs, while Paige Sawyer put down six kills and six total blocks, including three solo blocks. Blythe Sealey finished with 50 assists and 11 digs, while Madeline Gilder finished with a career high 17 digs and four service aces. Brooke Ark led the Battlin' Bears with 28 digs.

The Battlin' Bears remain a perfect 5-0 at home and have won four consecutive matches. Their win on Wednesday evening ties them with #10 Montana Tech at 6-2 in conference play with two matches remaining, including a head-to-head match with the Orediggers in the Fortin Education Center on Sunday, November 5th at 4:00pm.

Rocky Volleyball will be back in action on Saturday evening as they take on the Skylights of MSU-Northern in Havre beginning at 6:00pm.
