Rocky Football Runs Past MSU-Northern on Senior Day 54-6

BILLINGS, Mont.- The Battlin' Bears totaled over 600 yards of offense as they concluded their 2023 season with a lopsided victory over MSU-Northern at home.

After both teams traded punts to begin the game, the Battlin' Bears started their second offensive drive deep inside their own territory. On a 3rd and 11 attempt, Graedyn Buell stepped up in the pocket and found Jack Waddell down the sideline, who took the pass in and out ran the Lights' defense for 92 yards and a touchdown, the longest play from scrimmage this season and the longest since 2014 (Bryce Baker, 93 yard rush against MSU-Northern), as the Battlin' Bears held a 7-0 lead going into the second quarter.

On the second play of the second quarter, senior Cade Lambert took a rush up the middle from six yards out into the endzone after an extra push from his offensive line, giving Rocky a 14-0 lead. After a Northern three-and-out, Graedyn Buell led the Battlin' Beards down the field, eventually finding Joseph Dwyer in the back corner of the endzone for a touchdown from 11 yards out, taking a 21-0 lead into halftime.

The Rocky offense would click in the third quarter, scoring on their first three offensive possessions of the second half. Buell would find Dwyer again on the first possession of the second half, this time from 12 yards out to extend their lead. Buell would next find Zaire Wilcox on a swing pass, as Wilcox rumbled up the sideline, putting his shoulder down and trucking his way into the endzone. Wilcox would strike again on the first play of the next possession, breaking open on a wheel route before putting a juke move on a Northern defender on his way for a 71 yard touchdown reception.

The Lights would respond with their lone score of the day on the following possession, as Ashton Platt completed back-to-back long completions. Brail Lipford would get a hand on the PAT attempt, keeping the lead to 42-6 entering the fourth quarter.

The Battlin' Bears would earn a safety on the first play of the fourth quarter after a bad snap was recovered by the Lights in their own endzone. Austin Drake would cap off the following offensive possession with a 22 yard field goal. Freshman Ja'Varien Salter would put the cherry on top of a great afternoon, breaking free for 55 yards for his first collegiate touchdown, giving Rocky a 54-6 victory at home.

Graedyn Buell finished the day throwing 23-of-30 for 449 yards and 5 touchdowns and no interceptions in just three quarters of play. Joseph Dwyer finished with 10 receptions for 167 yards and two touchdowns. Zaire Wilcox had another impressive day out of the backfield, rushing 13 times for 37 yards, while pulling in four catches for 93 yards and two touchdowns. The Battlin' Bears finished the day with 605 yards of offense, the most in a single game since tallying 604 yards of offense in a 48-42 win on November 11th, 2017.

The Rocky defense was led by six total tackles from Jayden Fletcher and Wyatt Brusven. Ethan Hurst tallied two sacks on the day, while Jack Cline tallied one of his own. The Battlin' Bears held MSU-Northern to 143 yards of offense, including only -2 rushing yards. Rocky's defense totaled 11 tackles for loss in the win.

The Battlin' Bears (6-4) finish their season on a three game win streak, outscoring their opponents 134-41 during that stretch to conclude the season. Saturday's win secures Rocky's third consecutive winning season.
