Rocky Volleyball Falls in Five Sets to Montana Western in the Frontier Conference Championship

GREAT FALLS, Mont.- The Battlin' Bears went to five sets for the fourth consecutive match, falling just short to the Bulldogs in the conference championship match.

Blythe Sealey tallied a late kill in the first set to give Rocky a 23-19 lead, seemingly on their way to a first set victory, until Montana Western stormed back on a 6-0 run to steal the first set back.

A big time 9-0 run for the Battlin' Bears that featured two service aces from Brooke Ark gave Rocky a lead midway through the second set. With a 24-16 lead for the Battlin' Bears, the Bulldogs put together another rally, scoring four consecutive points. Coach Yang Yang called a timeout, which helped Rocky regroup to tally the set sealing point, tying the match at one set a piece.

Neither team held a lead larger than three in the third set, as a kill from Bella Bryan knotted the set up at 25-25. After a Montana Western point, Makenna Bushman tallied a kill, then Paige Sawyer and Tiffany Fuhrmann combined for consecutive blocks as Rocky took the third set 28-26.

Montana Western would bounce back to take the final two sets however, hitting .276 with only three attack errors in the final fifth set to secure the Frontier Conference championship. The Bulldogs will receive the automatic qualifying berth to the NAIA National Tournament.

The Battlin' Bears were led by 17 kills and three blocks from Bella Bryan, 15 kills and 11 digs from Makenna Bushman, and 11 kills and 6 blocks from Rhiannon Nez. Blythe Sealey totaled 50 assists on the day, while Brooke Ark finished with a game high 33 digs.

Rocky Volleyball (21-12) will tune into the NAIA Selection Show to see if they earn an At-Large Bid on Monday at 1:00pm (MT).
