Rocky Women’s Basketball Grinds Out 56-51 Victory Over Arizona Christian

GLENDALE, Ariz.- The Battlin' Bears dominated on the boards, grabbing 20 offensive rebounds to help push them past Arizona Christian 56-51 on Friday.

The Firestorm started with an early lead, hitting three three pointers in the first quarter to take a 15-13 lead into the second quarter.

Gracee Lekvold was one of the few consistencies on offense throughout the game, putting together six points in the second quarter, while Morgan Baird grabbed five offensive rebounds in the second quarter alone. Despite 12 first half turnovers, Rocky held a one point lead going into the halftime break.

Six different Battlin' Bears scored in the third quarter as Brenna Linse scored a basket through a foul to give the Battlin' Bears a 10 point lead, the largest of the game to that point with a minute left in the third quarter.

Iliana Moran jump started the Battlin' Bears in the fourth quarter, as after a Gracee Lekvold jumper was good, Moran grabbed a steal and took it herself for a layup to put Rocky up with 7:18 remaining in the game. Rocky's offense still struggled throughout the quarter, shooting just 3-9 from the field with seven turnovers in the quarter, but tough defense and a combined 5-6 shooting from the free throw line from Ky Oliver and Gracee Lekvold secured a Battlin' Bear victory in Glendale, 56-51.

The Battlin' Bears were led by 17 points, eight rebounds, and two assists from Gracee Lekvold, 10 points, four rebounds, and two steals from Ky Oliver, and eight points, 12 rebounds, and two blocks from Dominique Stephens. Morgan Baird added eight points and 10 rebounds in the winning effort. Rocky shot just 35.6% from the field and 22.7% from three point range, but held the Firestorm to under 30% shooting from the field to win their second game of the season.

The Battlin' Bears (2-0) will stay in the Phoenix area as they take on SAGU American Indian College Saturday at 12:00pm PT.
