Oliver Leads Third Quarter Charge as Rocky Women Defeat UHSP 79-70

A career night from Ky Oliver sparks the Battlin' Bears to their eighth win of the season.

CHANDLER, Ariz.- Ky Oliver led a third-quarter scoring spree as she hit five of Rocky's eight threes in the quarter, propelling the Battlin' Bears to a 79-70 victory.

It was a hot start to the Cactus Classic for both offenses, as each team shot over 50% from the field in the first quarter with the Battlin' Bears holding a slight edge heading into the second quarter, 19-16.

The NAIA's leading scorer Grace Beyer began to show her ability in the second quarter, scoring 10 of the Eutectic's 16 points as her two free throws in the final 30 seconds of the half tied the game at 32-32.

The third quarter was one of the most electric in recent memory as the Battlin' Bears lit it up from the field. In the third quarter alone, the Battlin' Bears scored 34 points on 13-of-16 shooting from the field and eight-of-nine from three-point range.

Ky Oliver hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 39 with 7:18 to go, which sparked a 24-8 run over the next five minutes of play. Oliver was a perfect five-of-five from three-point range during that span, finishing the game with a career-high seven made threes on just 11 attempts. Iliana Moran was also key, hitting all three of her attempts from downtown to help Rocky build a 16-point lead going into the fourth quarter.

The game wasn't finished yet, as Beyer continued to impress with her scoring ability to keep UHSP in it. She started the fourth quarter on an 8-3 run of her own to cut the Eutectic's deficit. While the shots weren't falling as efficiently as they did in the third quarter, the Battlin' Bears turned the ball over only once in the fourth quarter as they held off a late push by UHSP to secure their eighth victory of the season.

Ky Oliver led the way with a career-high 25 points and seven three-pointers made. Oliver also added five rebounds and five assists, the five assists being a season-high mark. Iliana Moran finished with 16 points and five rebounds, while Gracee Lekvold added 13 points, eight assists, five rebounds, and two steals. Lekvold's eight assists are the most by a Battlin' Bear this season and set a new career high.

Morgan Baird was the fourth Battlin' Bear in double figures, scoring 10 on the evening. Dominique Stephens added five assists and a season-high four blocks. Rocky's 14 three-pointers made are the most in a single game since a lopsided 101-50 win over Southern Alberta Institute of Technology

The Battlin' Bears (8-0) will have Wednesday off before taking on Benedictine University-Mesa at 10:00 am (MT) on Thursday.
