Rocky Men’s Basketball Takes Down Carroll College 82-58 in the Frontier Conference Tournament Quarterfinals

The Battlin' Bears get their first Frontier Conference Tournament win since 2017-18

GREAT FALLS, Mont.- The Battlin' Bears exploded for 49 points in the second half to advance in the Frontier Conference Tournament after an 82-58 victory over Carroll College in Great Falls on Sunday evening.

The first half was a back and forth affair for both sides. A layup by Maxim Stephens with 11:20 remaining gave the Battlin' Bears a 17-11 lead going into the first media timeout. Carroll came marching back with a 15-4 run over the next five minutes, taking a 26-21 lead after a Brayden Koch jumper rattled in. Jesse Owens would get to the basket on back to back possessions at the end of the first half to cut the Carroll deficit to one going into the halftime break.

The Fighting Saints took control early in the second half, beginning on a 6-0 run. The next eight minutes for the Battlin' Bears would break the game wide open as they went g on a 33-7 run, in which they shot 13-15 from the field and 6-7 from three point range, led by 11 points from Scott Malikie in the 8:23 stretch. The Battlin' Bears took care of the ball to seal the game after their run, as they did not turn the ball over a single time in the final eight minutes on their way to a 24-point victory.

"It was a hard fought game like we knew it would be." Coach Bill Dreikosen said. "We turned the ball over too much in the first half. The end of the first half bucket by Jesse (Owens) was a good energy boost going into halftime. In the second half I thought our defense was very good and that got us some opportunities to get the offense going. A great team effort tonight and now we need to be ready again tomorrow."

The Battlin' Bears had four players score in double figures in the victory. Jesse Owens scored 20 points and dished three assists, Maxim Stephens scored 17 points and grabbed five rebounds in only 20 minutes of play, Kael Robinson finished with 12 points, three rebounds, and three assists, and Scott Malikie scored a career high 11 points on a perfect 5-5 from the field. Nick Hart grabbed a game high nine rebounds while also swiping three steals.

The Fighting Saints were led by 17 points, six rebounds, and three steals from Andrew Cook, while Brendan Temple added 16 points and seven rebounds.

The Battlin' Bears will wait for the result of Montana Western vs MSU-Northern to decide when and who they will face off in the Frontier Conference semifinals. If MSU-Northern wins, the Battlin' Bears will be the lowest seed remaining and will play Montana Tech at 6:00 pm on Monday evening. If Montana Western wins, the Battlin' Bears will be the highest seed remaining and will face off against University of Providence at 8:00 pm on Monday evening.
