Second Half Explosion Leads to 5-1 Victory for Rocky Women’s Soccer Over Argos

GREAT FALLS, Mont.- The Battlin' Bears looked very comfortable in their first match of record this season, scoring four times in the second half to cruise to a 5-1 victory over the University of Providence in Great Falls Thursday afternoon.

The Battlin' Bears got on the board just three minutes in, after junior Mandi Dallimore put a header in off a corner kick from Halle Labert to put the Rocky Women up 1-0 early. Providence's Tina Serwaa Ofori found an open net after a defensive miscommunication as she tied the game up at the 25:48 mark. Despite the tie score, the Battlin' Bears controlled possession in the first half, outshooting the Argos 9-2 going into the break.

The Argos had the first big chance to take the lead with a penalty shot at the 56:43 mark, but the attempt by freshman Shea Waters hit the top crossbar. From that point on, it was all Rocky Mountain College. A pair of freshmen linked up on the offensive end, as Morgan Hayes put a crossing pass right in front of Mya Maack, who put her shot into the back of the net to give Rocky a 2-1 lead. A scoring onslaught ensured, as Carly Roth was able to squeeze a shot into the goal through heavy traffic on an assist from Laura Kellner at the 72 minute mark, Halle Labert secured her opportunity on a penalty kick at the 77 minute mark, and Laura Kellner put the cherry on top with a goal of her own at the 79 minute mark, giving Rocky the 5-1 lead they would hold until the final.

"I'm proud of the performance today in tough conditions," Head Coach Richard Duffy said. "We started slow in the first half, however we were able to create quality opportunities in the second half. Solid win to start our season."

The Battlin' Bears outshot the Argos 17-7, putting eight of their shots on goal. Freshman Amber Wilkinson saved two of the three shots she faced in her first collegiate start.

The Rocky Women (1-0) will take on cross-town rivals MSU-Billings in an exhibition match on Saturday evening in the first installment of the Rimrock Rivalry. Kickoff is at 5:00pm, while the men's game will kickoff at 7:30pm at Yellowjacket Field.
