#23 Rocky Volleyball Finishes the Frontier Conference Preseason Tournament 2-2

DILLON, Mont.- With three of their four matches on the weekend going to five sets, the Battlin' Bears split their matchups on Saturday to finish the weekend 2-2.

The Battlin' Bears battled with Montana Western to begin the day, going all the way to a 25-25 tie in the first set, before the Bulldogs took the next two points to go up 1-0. Rocky never found rhythm in the second set, falling 25-17 as Western looked to close things out in three sets. The Battlin' Bears fought well, as with their backs up against the wall down 24-23, Bella Bryan led the charge with two kills to rally back to a 27-25 third set victory. The Bulldogs had the upper hand in Saturday's match however, as they shot out to an early fourth set lead and never let Rocky back in it, winning 25-18 to secure a four set victory.

Makenna Bushman led with 19 kills, while Bella Bryan also put down 16 of her own. Blythe Sealey finished with 45 assists and 12 digs, while Brooke Ark added a game high 33 digs in the loss.

The afternoon game featured the Battlin' Bears up against the Skylights of MSU-Northern, a team that Rocky has defeated the last three consecutive meetings. A tight first set saw a Rhiannon Nez kill tie the match at 17-17. The Skylights would light up the scoreboard following that kill, winning the next eight consecutive points on their way to the 25-17 first set victory.

Rocky would jump to an early second set lead and hold it through the end, as Bella Bryan spiked the final two kills in a 25-16 set two victory. More of the same in the third set, as Paige Sawyer impacted the game offensively and defensively, spiking five kills in the set, while adding two blocks and an assist in the 25-15 third set victory.

The fourth set paralleled the first set of the match, as after a Bella Bryan kill knotted things up at 18-18, MSU-Northern would finish the set on a 7-2 run to force the match into a fifth set.

The fifth set was the most competitive of the afternoon, as neither team pushed to a lead larger than three. After a Makenna Bushman kill gave Rocky a 15-14 lead, D'Lorah Cedillo answered back with a kill of her own to tie the match back up at 15-15. Rocky would pull out the victory in the end, as Kaitlyn Wood and Bella Bryan spiked back-to-back kills as Rocky finished with a victory in Dillon.

Bella Bryan spiked a game high 18 kills in the victory, Blythe Sealey tallied 54 assists and 14 digs, and Brooke Ark finished with 29 digs. Rocky had four players with double digit kills in the victory, as Rhiannon Nez finished with 14, Paige Sawyer finished with 11, and Makenna Bushman finished with 10.

Rocky Volleyball (10-6) will take on MSU Billings in a Rimrock Rivarly matchup on Tuesday, September 19th in Alterowitz Gym. That match will be an exhibition for the Battlin' Bears. Rocky's conference schedule begins with a home match against Carroll College on Friday, September 22nd.
