Rocky Volleyball Wins Thriller in Five Sets Over Montana Western

BILLINGS, Mont.- Rocky Volleyball outlasted the Bulldogs Friday evening in a five set slugfest that resulted in a Battlin' Bear victory. 

Bella Bryan led the charge in the first set, spiking six kills to lead things off as Rocky hit a .309 percentage on their way to a 25-20 set win to start the match after the Battlin' Bears finished the set on a 7-1 run. 

Neither team created much of a lead in any set Friday evening, as Montana Western pulled away to their largest lead in the second set after a Kaylee Kopp kill to make it 23-19 Bulldogs. The Battlin' Bears capitalized on Montana Western errors to tie things back up at 23-23, but Western's Jordan Olson would go back to back with a kill and a block to tie the match at 1-1. 

Defense at the net was an advantage for the Battlin' Bears in the third set, totaling five blocks as a team in a back and forth set, including three blocks from freshman Kaitlyn Wood. Their defense would eventually secure a third set victory, as with the match tied 25-25, Rhiannon Nez would give Rocky back-to-back points with a kill and a solo block for a 27-25 third set win for Rocky. 

Another back and forth set in the fourth set, as neither team extended a lead larger than three. While the Battlin' Bears looked ready to seal the match with a 26-25 lead, the Bulldogs rattled off three straight kills to force a fifth set. 

The fifth set is where the Battlin' Bears finally found separation, jumping out to an 11-4 lead, the largest lead of the night for either team. Makenna Bushman tallied five kills in the final set to help the Battlin' Bears secure a five set victory. 

The Battlin' Bears finished with 15 total blocks on the evening, while hitting at a .171 percentage in the winning effort.
