Rocky Volleyball Falls in Five Sets to No. 19 Montana Western in Frontier Conference Quarterfinals

HAVRE, Mont.—The Battlin' Bears 2024 season ended with a tight five-set match against No. 19 Montana Western in the Frontier Conference Tournament Quarterfinals.

How it Happened

The Battlin' Bears controlled the first set to open the afternoon, combining for a hitting percentage of .231 as a team and forcing nine Bulldog attack errors as they cruised to a 25-18 opening set win.

After Makenna Bushman spiked a kill to take an 8-7 lead in the second set, Montana Western erupted for a 10-2 run to take a seven-point lead, carrying their momentum to eventually seal a 25-18 victory, capped off by back-to-back kills from Jordan Olson.

Liddia Fontaine spiked a pair of kills to push the Battlin' Bears to a 10-6 lead. The third set mirrored the second set, as the Bulldogs utilized a mid-set run to extend a favorable lead as Jazi Smith put down a spike to give Western a 22-17 lead. Rocky battled back for consecutive points, but Montana Western turned in three consecutive points to win the third set.

The fourth set was one of the more entertaining bouts of the season, as neither side led by more than three points for the duration of the set. Ultimately, a pair of attack errors by Montana Western would be the difference, as the Battlin' Bears would force a fifth set

With the match tied at 2-2, Montana Western delivered the final blow in the fifth set, jumping out to a 12-4 lead. While Gabriella Panzetta pulled the Battlin' Bears back into the set with three kills and a block, the Bulldogs secured the fifth set victory to advance to the Frontier Conference semifinals.
