Rocky Men Withstand Vikings’ Defensive Pressure For 79-72 Win in the Sam Milanovich Classic

DICKINSON, N.D.- The Battlin' Bears held Valley City State scoreless over the final two minutes to secure a seven-point victory in Dickinson.

How it Happened

Turnovers were a major factor throughout the contest as the Battlin' Bears navigated a unique Valley City State defense.

The Vikings were the first to gather momentum, taking a 17-8 lead after the first five minutes. Jaylon Lee and Carter McCoy combined to lead Rocky back into it, and the two were the driving force offensively for a 26-10 run as the Battlin' Bears swooped back to grab a seven-point lead. Both teams traded baskets for the final four minutes of the first half, as Rocky went into the locker room with a four-point lead. While the Battlin' Bears totaled 13 turnovers in the first half, they made up for it by outrebounding the Vikings 23-10 through the first twenty minutes.

Neither team created much separation for the first eight minutes of the second half until Valley City State rattled off an 11-2 run to grab a six-point lead inside the final ten minutes.

While things didn't roll as seamlessly as in past games during Rocky's win streak, the Battlin' Bears found a way to find victory, buckling down on defense and holding Valley City State without a made field goal for the final 4:43 of the game in Dickinson, as a 10-1 run to conclude the game was enough for the Battlin' Bears to claim a weekend sweep in the Sam Milanovich Classic.

Notable Statistics
