Rocky Men’s Basketball Splits Season Series Against Yellowjackets; Fall 93-83

BILLINGS, Mont.- The Battlin' Bears suffered their first defeat in over a month as they could not withstand a hot-shooting Yellowjacket group on Tuesday evening.

How it Happened

Three-point shooting catapulted MSU Billings out to an early lead, as the Yellowjackets hit seven of their first 12 three-point attempts in the opening ten minutes of the contest, as they built their largest lead of the night at 17 points when Jalen Tot got a layup to fall to settle the lead to 31-14. Rocky was able to slow the pace of the rivalry matchup, getting to the free throw line ten times in the final nine minutes and pairing their efficient shooting from the line with a trio of three-pointers to cut their deficit to 11 at the half after Jaylon Lee got a putback layup to go down before the half concluded.

Lee was a force in the first half, leading with a game-high 18 first-half points to pair with five early offensive rebounds.

The Battlin' Bears were the first to strike in the second half, opening the half on a 14-3 run thanks to three early turnovers from the Yellowjackets. Three-point shooting would again propel MSU Billings to extend their lead, as they would respond with a 13-4 run of their own after rattling off three-of-four shots from long range to extend their lead back out to 14 points.

Like the first half, the Battlin' Bears used an advantage at the free-throw line to respond with a 9-2 run. While the Rocky men continued to battle, cutting their deficit to single digits inside of four minutes to go, the Yellowjackets made the most of their free throw opportunities, hitting on all seven of their trips to the charity stripe in the final five minutes to hold off the Battlin' Bears on their home court.

Notable Statistics

Jaylon Lee again impressed, stuffing the stat sheet with his fourth double-double of the season, finishing the night with 26 points,  17 rebounds, including seven offensive rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and two steals. Jesse Owens tallied a season-high 18 points after being honored pregame for surpassing 1,000 career points. Omari Nesbit and Colton Spencer each added 12 points.

Rocky made a season-high 25 free throws on 30 attempts on the evening, while MSU Billings also converted 20 of their 22 attempts. Both teams totaled nine turnovers and Rocky narrowly outrebounded the Yellowjackets 35-34.

Jalen Tot led the charge for the Yellowjackets, scoring 24 points and grabbing eight rebounds. He was one of three MSUB players to convert three or more three-pointers, as the Yellowjackets tied their season high with 13 three-pointers.
