Rocky Men’s Basketball Overcomes Cold Shooting For a 72-69 Victory Over Park-Gilbert

CHANDLER, Ariz.- Jesse Owens ignited a cold Battlin' Bear offense in the second half, leading the Rocky men to their second victory in the Cactus Classic on Sunday afternoon.

How it Happened

The Battlin' Bears came out strong offensively, shooting 50% from the field in the first half in Arizona. However, turnovers kept the game within reach. Rocky's halftime lead was at three, as the Battlin' Bears allowed 11 turnovers, while the Buccaneers shot a solid 45% from the field.

Offense became hard to come by for the Battlin' Bears in the second half, as they only shot 4-of-24 from the field over the first 12 minutes of action, allowing Park-Gilbert to extend a lead as large as ten points.

When Rocky needed a spark, in stepped senior guard Jesse Owens, who erupted for 11 straight points, including three made three-pointers, the last of which forced a Buccaneer timeout after Rocky swiped back a one-point lead with five minutes remaining.

From then on, the Battlin' Bear defense secured the victory, holding the Buccaneers to one-of-seven from the field to close out the game, securing the three-point victory in the Cactus Classic.

Notable Statistics

Jesse Owens' spark in the second half propelled him to a game-high and season-high 21 points, including five three-pointers, while adding three assists. Jaylon Lee tallied his fifth consecutive double-double (including Saturday's triple-double), finishing with 13 points, 15 rebounds, three assists, and two steals. A.J. Wilson was also in double figures scoring, adding ten points, while Carter McCoy grabbed 13 rebounds in the win.

While Rocky had their worst shooting night of the season so far, shooting 35% from the field and only 25% shooting in the second half, they were able to overcome this slump with strong efforts on the boards, outrebounding Park-Gilbert 48-36, which also included 19 offensive rebounds.

The Buccanneers were led by 16 points, two steals, and two blocks by Toate Sika, who made his season debut on Sunday.
