PREVIEW: (RV) Rocky Women’s Basketball Hosts #18 Mayville State on Saturday Evening

BILLINGS, Mont.- Rocky Women's Basketball will play their third consecutive game against a current North Star and future Frontier Conference opponent, hosting No. 18-ranked Mayville State on Saturday at 5:00 pm.

Last Time Out

Last weekend, the Battlin' Bears rattled off consecutive victories in the Sam Milanovich Classic in Dickinson, North Dakota, defeating Dickinson State and Valley City State. 

Rocky's defense continued to lead the Battlin' Bears' success, holding both opponents to 65 points or less in eight of their nine contests. Senior forward Sydney Dethman broke out for her second and third time this season, scoring 20 or more points, including a career-high 27 points against Valley City State University. Her efforts earned her Frontier Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors, averaging 23.5 points per game on over 70% shooting from the field over the weekend. 

The Battlin' Bears shot exceptionally well from three-point range over the weekend, hitting 18 total threes on over 47% shooting from deep. Rocky's in-and-out style of play was evident in their two victories, combining for 44 free throw attempts total. 

Gracee Lekvold stood out defensively, totaling six steals in the victory over Dickinson State. Her 2.6 steals per game so far this season ranks 2nd in the Frontier Conference.

Protect Home Court
On Saturday, the Battlin' Bears will seek their first victory in the Fortin Education Center this season when they play host to the Mayville State University Comets, the No. 18-ranked team in the NAIA and a future Frontier Conference member. 

Raining Threes
The Battlin' Bears have been the top three-point shooting team in the Frontier Conference this season, combining for a 36.3% rate on their three-point attempts. Rocky's 7.7 made threes per game also lead the conference, totaling five games with eight or more made three-pointers this season. 

Scouting the Comets
Mayville State University has begun their season 7-1, with their lone loss entering the weekend coming to (RV) Montana Tech in Butte on November 14th. The Comets are coming off a trip to the NAIA National Championship Quarterfinals, falling to the eventual national champion Dordt Defenders. They are led this season by 2023 NSAA First Team All-Conference guard Mackenzie Hughes, who has scored 20 or more points in five of the seven games she has played. The Comets have thrived on both ends of the court this season, averaging a staggering 93.9 points per game while holding their opponents to just 55.7 points per game with an averaging scoring margin of 38.1 points. Their loss to the Orediggers is the only contest this season in which they scored less than 80 points.
