Rocky Women’s Basketball Falls to No. 13 Providence 65-54

BILLINGS, Mont.- A slow start offensively harshed the Battlin' Bears in a 65-54 loss to the No. 13 ranked University of Providence.

Offense came at a premium in the first quarter, as both teams struggled shooting from deep, combining for 0-12 from three-point range through the first 10 minutes of play, The Argos held a slim 12-8 lead going into the second quarter.

A lone free throw from Gracee Lekvold would be the only point scored for the Battlin' Bears for the first seven minutes of the second quarter as Rocky struggled from the field, missing their first 11 shots of the quarter. The offense rallied back, finishing the half on a 9-1 run as the Battlin' Bears cut a deficit that was as large as 16 down to just eight. Offensively, the Battlin' Bears were just 5-27 from the field at halftime.

Providence's Ashlee Maldonado took complete control of the third quarter, scoring 16 points in the quarter to extend the Argos' lead going into the fourth quarter.

Five fourth-quarter turnovers by the Battlin' Bears proved to be enough to dispel any comeback efforts as the No. 13 ranked Argos grabbed the victory in Billings.

Morgan Baird led the way with 12 points off the bench. Brenna Linse added 10 points and seven rebounds, while Tailyn Black added a career-high eight points. Madeline Heggem grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.

Ashlee Maldonado led the Argos with 25 points, six rebounds, and five steals in the win. Eliannah Ramirez added 12 points and three steals off the bench.

The Rocky women (14-9, 3-8 conf.) hit the road for the final time of the regular season, taking on Montana Tech and MSU-Northern next week.
