Rocky Women’s Basketball Drops Regular Season Finale 86-73

BILLINGS, Mont.- Morgan Baird's 35-point double-double wasn't enough on Saturday as Battlin' Bears fell short to conclude their regular season.

Both teams were efficient from the field in the first quarter, each shooting over 50% from the field. Turnovers hurt the Rocky women, as six takeaways from the Bulldogs gave them a three-point edge going into the second quarter.

The second quarter became a duel between two of the Frontier Conference's top scorers, as Morgan Baird got the hot hand for Rocky, scoring 12 in the quarter on 5-7 shooting from the field. On the other side, Jordan Sweeney fired off five threes for 19 total points in the quarter as the Bulldogs held a 10-point lead at the half.

Baird and Sweeney continued to battle back and forth, as Baird opened up the third quarter by making her first five shot attempts as she shot 7-8 from the field in the third quarter. Sweeney added 10 third-quarter points with six made free throws. The Battlin' Bears struggled from three in the third quarter, missing all six three-point attempts in the quarter.

Both teams traded baskets throughout the third and fourth quarters, as the Bulldogs were able to hold their lead created in the second quarter to defeat the Battlin' Bears 86-73 to conclude the regular season.

Morgan Baird led the way for Rocky, finishing with a career-high 35 points and 10 rebounds while shooting 16-21 from the field. She is the second Battlin' Bear this season to surpass 30 points in a single game (Ky Oliver 1/13/24 vs MSUN) and her 35 points are the most in a single game by a Battlin' Bear since N'Dea Flye scored 37 points against Montana Western in January 2022.

Jordan Sweeney finished as the game's leading scorer, finishing with 43 points.

Saturday's game was inconsequential to seeding for the Frontier Conference Tournament next week as all teams were locked into their places. The Battlin' Bears will enter as the fifth seed to take on fourth-seeded MSU-Northern on Thursday, February 29th at 5:00 pm (MT) in the Four Seasons Arena in Great Falls.
