Third Quarter Shooting Slump Halts #20 Battlin’ Bears Against #22 Carroll College

HELENA, Mont.- The Battlin' Bears suffered their first conference loss and first road loss of the season to the No. 22-ranked Fighting Saints on Thursday evening.

A 16-2 run to open the second half was the ultimate difference in the contest for Carroll College, defeating the Battlin' Bears to tie the Rocky women at the top of the conference standings.

How it Happened

Carroll College came out firing to begin the game on their home court, scoring the first ten points of the contest to grab an early lead. A timeout by Head Coach Wes Keller halted the momentum as the Battlin' Bears responded with an 11-0 run of their own, seven of those points coming from Paige Wasson. In total, their run combined to a 21-8 run to close the final six minutes of the quarter to take a three-point lead into the second quarter.

Both teams flexed their offensive firepower throughout the first half, with both teams shooting exactly 12-of-24 from the field going into the second-quarter media timeout. The Battlin' Bears were held scoreless over the final two minutes of the half, giving the Saints wiggle room to grab a five-point lead going into halftime, 38-33.

The Battlin' Bear offense struggled coming out of the locker room, and the Fighting Saints took full advantage, putting together a 16-2 run over the first six minutes of the second half to grab a 19-point lead. While the Rocky women would weather the storm with an 8-3 finish to the third quarter, Carroll College held a double-digit lead going into the fourth quarter.

While Rocky's offense bounced back in the fourth quarter, shooting over 50% from the field, it was not enough to overcome their third-quarter deficit, falling to Carroll College 70-56.

Notable Statistics

Iliana Moran finished as Rocky's leading scorer with 13 points, adding two assists. Paige Wasson totaled 10 points and six rebounds, while Gracee Lekvold tallied nine points and four steals.

Eleven offensive rebounds from the Fighting Saints turned into 11 second-chance points, and 11 made three-pointers throughout the game, which was too much for the Battlin' Bears to overcome.

Willa Albrecht was the game's leading scorer with 20 points, including five made three-pointers.
