Rocky Football Earns Dramatic 29-27 Victory at Home Over Mayville State on Senior Day

BILLINGS, Mont.- Senior Austin Drake experienced a storybook ending to his collegiate career, booting the game-winning field goal to give the Battlin' Bears a two-point victory on Senior Day.

Rocky's victory wraps up their 2025 season, finishing the year with a conference record of 4-2, finishing third in the East Division, and an overall record of 4-6.

The Battlin' Bears put together a game-winning drive, aided by a pair of costly Comet penalties and a key 39-yard pass from Trent Nobach to Tyler Abbott, eventually setting up Austin Drake's 24-yard game-winning field goal.

How it Happened

Rocky's senior day celebration did not start as planned, as Mayville State's DeAnthony Thompson would record a strip sack before picking up the fumble and returning the ball 39 yards for a Comet touchdown, putting the Battlin' Bears in a 7-0 hole less than a minute into the contest.

Mayville State's offense would control time of possession with a strong running attack, totaling 22 plays, 71 yards, and over 12 minutes of game time on their first two offensive possessions. Rocky's defense held firm, bending but not breaking, to keep Mayville State scoreless, despite both drives ending in Battlin' Bear territory.

Rocky's offense would find their first points of the afternoon midway through the second quarter, as a 13-play, 53-yard drive would result in a 39-yard field goal from Austin Drake to bring the score to 7-3.

Mayville State would have its response, as just the third pass attempt on the day for the Comets would be completed for a 31-yard touchdown, extending Mayville State's lead to 14-3.

The Battlin' Bears would find the endzone for the first time on the afternoon before the halftime break, as a pair of strong runs from Tuff Adams and an 18-yard connection from Trent Nobach to Tyson Hunt would set up a 25-yard touchdown pass from Nobach to Eric Lira, bringing the halftime score to a 14-10 Mayville State lead.

Mayville State would score on their opening possession, as another deep pass completion for the Comets would eventually set up a fourth and goal conversion on the one-yard line by quarterback Aiden Marcussen, pushing their lead to 21-10.

Trent Nobach and Eric Lira would have their quick response, as the duo connected for completions of 32 and 47 yards, eventually leading to a four-yard rushing touchdown from Lira to cut Rocky's deficit down to four.

Rocky's defense would force a three-and-out on the following Comet possession, capitalized by a Jabari Madison Jr. sack.

Again, it would be Nobach completing chunk plays to lead Rocky down the field, finding Bergen Mysse for 16 yards and Tuff Adams for 21, eventually leading to a 25-yard Austin Drake field goal to bring the contest to a 21-20 score.

Rocky would grab their first lead of the contest to open the fourth quarter, as Trent Nobach found Jacoby Falo for a 39-yard leaping catch in the end zone, putting the Battlin' Bears up 26-21 following a failed two-point conversion attempt.

Mayville State would take the lead right back on their following possession, utilizing another deep completion to break them into Battlin' Bear territory, followed by running back Moses Nuahpa breaking away for a 25-yard rush on a 3rd down to give Mayville State a 27-26 advantage, following their own failed two-point conversion attempt.

The Battlin' Bears would get their first chance at taking the lead back before an interception deep in Comet territory gave Mayville State possession with 3:21 remaining in the game. Rocky's defense would show up big, forcing a three-and-out and giving the Battlin' Bears the ball back with under two minutes to go.

With Rocky facing 3rd-and-17, Mayville State would be flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct, giving Rocky a fresh set of downs. After a Comet sack on first down, Trent Nobach found Tyler Abbott on a 39-yard reception, clawing Rocky near field goal range. Mayville State would be flagged for another unsportsmanlike conduct, setting Rocky up in the red zone. Following a pair of key runs from Tuff Adams, Rocky would spike it with just five seconds remaining, setting senior Austin Drake up for a game-winning field goal. Tyler Anderson's snap was on, Evan Rouane's hold was effortless, and Drake put a bow on Rocky's senior day by putting the ball straight through the uprights, ending Rocky's season on a good note with a 29-27 victory.
