(RV) Rocky Women’s Basketball Secures Regular Season Title After 85-81 Victory Over Montana Western

DILLON, Mont.- The Rocky women claimed an outright Frontier Conference Regular Season title after securing a victory over Montana Western on Saturday afternoon.

The championship is Rocky's first outright conference title since 1987-88. The Battlin' Bears were co-regular season champions in 2021-22. Rocky went on to win the conference tournament in both those seasons.

Gracee Lekvold surpassed 1,000 career points as a Battlin' Bear in the victory, totaling 23 points on the evening, helping the Battlin' Bears secure a season sweep of the Bulldogs.

How it Happened

Gracee Lekvold had the hot hand to start for Rocky, sinking all four of her three-point attempts in the first quarter. Isabelle Heggem added a three-pointer in the final seconds of the quarter to give the Battlin' Bears a 22-20 lead.

After both teams traded baskets to open the second quarter, the Battlin' Bears rattled off a 6-0 run to grab a five-point lead. With neither team creating much seperation throughout the quarter, Isabelle Heggem would drill a pair of free throws to tie the game at 40-40. The Bulldogs would get two baskets to go in the final 30 seconds, giving Montana Western a four-point halftime advantage.

Sydney Dethman came out of the gates firing for the Battlin' Bears, leading Rocky on a 10-0 run to start the half, a stretch where Rocky hit their first four shots from the field in the half. While Western would bounce back offensively, Dethman would put together a 6-0 personal run, helping the Battlin' Bears build a lead back up to nine points heading into the fourth quarter.

Montana Western would not go down quietly, as they kicked off the quarter on an 8-0 run to force a Battlin' Bear timeout as their lead had shrunk down to one. Rocky responded well following the timeout, as Isabelle Heggem would score eight of Rocky's 11 points out of the timeout en route to an 11-4 run that pushed their lead back out to seven. The final two minutes were an exciting stretch, with both teams trading baskets through the final whistle, but ultimately, a forced turnover that followed a layup by Isabelle Heggem with 27 seconds helped secure the Rocky victory after Gracee Lekvold iced the game with a pair of free throws.
