Rocky Men’s Soccer Draws with No. 15-Ranked Baker University 2-2

BALDWIN CITY, Kan.- The Battlin' Bears withstood the test of back-to-back matchups with top-ranked opponents, finishing in a 2-2 draw against No. 15-ranked Baker University on the road.

A promising start to the season for the Rocky men sees back-to-back draws with top-ranked opponents, following an exciting 4-4 draw against No. 9-ranked Missouri Valley College on Saturday evening. Over the past two seasons entering this weekend, the Battlin' Bear men had a record of just 0-2-1 against top-25 opponents.

How It Happened

Paul Katende scored the game's lone first-half goal, marking his first career collegiate goal. An errant Wildcat pass gave Rocky possession deep in Baker's territory, eventually setting up a corner kick for Rory O'Donnell. O'Donnell's kick found Raul Villar, who looped a pass into the box for Ryan Daniel, as the senior captain quickly found a streaking Katende, and the sophomore from Lubumbashi, Congo, secured the goal, giving the Battlin' Bears a 1-0 lead.

The Battlin' Bears were outshot 5-3 in the first half overall, but the defensive backfield for Rocky limited Baker to just one shot on goal through the opening 45 minutes.

Scoring would pick up in the second half, as the Wildcats found their equalizing goal thanks to a sleek move from Noah Conover in the 62nd minute.

Lorenzo Klamler would give Rocky the lead again just five minutes later, as Ryan Daniel intercepted a Wildcat attack, setting up the Rocky offense for a breakaway. Jeremiah Espana sent a crosser across the box, which a Baker defender tipped, but still found the right foot of Lorenzo Klamler, who sent a shot into the back of the net to give Rocky a 2-1 advantage in the 67th minute.

No. 15-ranked Baker University would secure the final goal of the match in the 75th minute, as Evans Osei Amankwah would pinpoint a header to the top corner of the net following a Wildcat corner kick to tie the game at 2-2, a score that would hold through the final horn.

A back-and-forth match saw both teams put four shots on goal, while Baker had a narrow shot total advantage, 9-7. Rocky again displayed a versatile offensive attack, as seven different players totaled a shot attempt. Over their first two matches, four different Battlin' Bears have scored their six total goals, and 11 Rocky players have logged a shot attempt.
