Rocky Men’s and Women’s Golf Lead Beartooth Invitational After Day One

LAUREL, Mont.- The Battlin' Bear Golf teams maintain double-digit stroke leads entering the final round of play on Tuesday at Laurel Golf Club. 

Battlin' Bear Women Hold Five of the Six Top Scores

Rocky's women controlled the field on day one, boasting five of the top six scores after 18 holes. Tyla Potgieter led the charge, shooting three-over-par 75. Kadence Fischer followed in second with a score of five-over-par 77. Kirsten Smith finished just a stroke behind in third place, shooting six-over-par 78. 

Grace Metcalf rounded out Rocky's leading scorers, shooting seven-over-par 79 to tie for fourth overall. Rocky wrapped up day one with a team score of 21-over-par 309, holding a 16-stroke lead on Montana Tech entering the final 18 holes on Tuesday. 

The Battlin' Bear women had a pair of teams competing, as the second team wrapped up day one in fourth place overall. Freshman Carlee Verdugo led the way for the "B" Team, tying for fourth overall with a score of seven-over-par 79. AnaJulia Silva tied for 17th overall with a score of 14-over-par 86, and Catalina Garcia followed, tied for 21st overall with a score of 15-over-par 87. Megan Voegele rounded out the "B" team scorers, shooting 20-over-par 92. 

Rocky's Men's Consistency Leads to Big Lead

Jared Smith finished day one three strokes ahead of anyone else in the field, shooting nine-under-par 135 (67, 68). Aidan McDonagh tied for second overall with a score of six-under-par 138 (70, 68), while Kristjan Burkelca followed a stroke behind in fourth place, shooting five-under-par 139 (70, 69). Sam Norman rounded out the Battlin' Bear scorers tied for fifth overall, shooting four-under-par 140 (69, 71). Adam Hyde-Lay also ended the day in the top ten overall, tying for seventh overall with a score of one-under-par 143 (70, 73). 

Rocky's men used a pair of 12-under-par 276 scores as a team to finish the day 24-under-par to lead by 15 strokes over No. 19-ranked Lewis-Clark State. 

The Battlin' Bear men also had a second team competing in the Beartooth Invite, as they sit in fifth place following the first two rounds with a score of 33-over-par 603 (309, 304) . Alexander Brester led the way for the Rocky "B" team, tying 14th overall with a score of two-over-par 146 (75, 71). Tye Boone (73, 82), Lydon Patascher (77, 78), and Dallen Atnip (80, 75) all rounded out the scorers, tying for 28th overall with a total score of 11-over-par 155. 

Up Next

Both the men and women will play a final 18 holes on Tuesday morning, with a 9:00 am (MT) shotgun start at Laurel Golf Club.
