BILLINGS, Mont.- The Battlin' Bear women took an early lead in the Leslie Spalding Cup, while the men trail by a point in the Mike Grob Cup after day one's four-ball matches at Yegen Golf Club. 

In a four-ball match, each member of a two-person team plays their own ball, so four balls are in play on every hole. Each team counts the lowest of its two scores on each hole, and the team whose player has the lowest score wins the hole. If the low scores are tied, the hole is halved. Monday's four-ball matches kicked off the three-day tournament that serves as the Rimrock Rivalry event for men's and women's golf. 

The Battlin' Bear women won two of the four matches on day one, as the pairings of Carlee Verdugo and Catalina Garcia (5 & 4), as well as Kadence Fischer and Alivia Webinger (1 up) took match victories on Monday. Megan Voegele and Kirsten Smith halved their matchup, giving both teams a half point. 

In the Spalding Cup, the Rocky women will need to earn 8.5 points to reclaim the cup, while the MSUB women only need to earn eight total points to retain it.

On the men's side, Rocky won two of the five matches, as the pairings of Aidan McDonagh and Ashton Grewell (2 & 1), along with Tye Boone and Makstr McIntyre (4 & 3) earned points for the Battlin' Bears. 

After a dominant 12.5 - 3.5 victory in the Grob Cup in 2024, the Battlin' Bear men face an early deficit. Rocky needs to earn 10 points to retain the Grob Cup, while the MSUB men need to earn 10.5 points to take home the cup.
