Rocky Football Dominates Homecoming Matchup Against MSU-Northern 48-14

BILLINGS, Mont.- Two pick-sixes, a blocked punt returned for a touchdown, and three rushing touchdowns highlighted an explosive first half as Rocky Football controlled all three phases in a lopsided 48-14 Homecoming victory over MSU-Northern.

The win keeps the Battlin' Bears undefeated in East Division play at 3-0 and marks the program's largest margin of victory on Herb Klindt Field since November 2023.

How it Happened

The afternoon began with a potential recipe for disaster after the Battlin' Bears were pinned at their own 4-yard line on the game's opening possession. Jae'Sean Pete quickly flipped the script, taking five consecutive carries to give Rocky room to operate. Quarterback Jhett Schwahn then went to work through the air, connecting with Javonte King and Tyler Abbott for first-down gains before finding Pete for a 35-yard reception. After Pete was tripped up inside the 10-yard line by a shoestring tackle, he punched it into the end zone two plays later to cap an 11-play, 96-yard opening drive that gave Rocky an early 7-0 lead.

The Lights responded with an offensive push into Rocky territory, but defensive back Jayson Cady halted their momentum by stepping in front of a pass and returning it 80 yards for a touchdown. The pick-six was Cady's second interception of the season and Rocky's first interception returned for a touchdown since 2022 (Jayden Fletcher vs. Eastern Oregon), extending the lead to 14-0 with under two minutes remaining in the quarter. The Battlin' Bears weren't done with their highlight plays, as following a quick three-and-out by MSU-Northern, Mateo Poso blocked a Lights punt, scooped up the ball, and scored to push the lead to 21-0 entering the second quarter, all off just a single Rocky offensive possession.

Despite spending nearly 15 minutes of game time on the sideline, Rocky's offense needed only three plays to strike again after an MSU-Northern punt. Ty Battle ignited the drive with a 34-yard run to flip the field, Bergen Mysse hauled in a 20-yard catch-and-run, and Battle punched it in from five yards out. On the very first play of MSU-Northern's ensuing possession, KJ Johnston stepped in front of a pass and returned it 35 yards for Rocky's second pick-six of the half, stretching the lead to 35-0 with 11 minutes still remaining in the second quarter.

MSU-Northern finally got on the board on its next drive, but Rocky answered immediately. After Schwahn was sacked to set up a third-and-19, Mysse pulled in a crucial conversion pass. Pete followed on the next snap by breaking free for a 35-yard touchdown, his second rushing score of the afternoon.

Jayson Cady snuffed out another scoring threat late in the second quarter, picking off his second pass of the game in the end zone to halt a 14-play MSU-Northern drive with just 30 seconds left in the half. Refusing to coast into the locker room, Ty Battle ripped off a 33-yard run on the first play, setting up Jordan Legg to drill a program-record 52-yard field goal to give Rocky a commanding 45-7 halftime lead.

The Battlin' Bears defense maintained its pressure in the second half, as Rylan Quintana forced a fumble on the Lights' opening possession, setting up a 27-yard field goal by Jordan Legg to make it 48-7. Cohen Groener forced another fumble on the following drive as the defense continued to force turnovers.

Though the Lights managed a touchdown early in the fourth quarter, Rocky's depth unit shut the door down the stretch, forcing a pair of three-and-outs and securing an interception by Colter Solomon to cap off the 48-14 victory.

Notable Statistics

Rocky's defense stole the show, led by Jayson Cady's team-high seven tackles and two interceptions.
