Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 8 Rocky Men’s Soccer Upset in CCC Quarterfinals; Eliminated in PK Shootout by Warner Pacific

MEDFORD, Ore.- Rocky Men's Soccer saw its Cascade Collegiate Conference Tournament run end in heartbreak on Saturday evening, falling to Warner Pacific in a penalty kick shootout.

Having already clinched an automatic bid to the NAIA National Championships, the Battlin' Bears will await the NAIA Selection Show on Friday, Nov. 13.

How it Happened

Henry Chalkley got the Battlin' Bears on the board in the first four minutes of the match, striking a low 30-yarder that swept past the goalkeeper and gave Rocky an early 1-0 lead. Warner Pacific matched the score in the 29th minute, resulting in a 1-1 halftime draw.

Jay Herbert found the net in the first two minutes of the second half. Fellow freshman Evan Odle set up Herbert with a well-placed header to give Rocky the lead. Fynn Sweeting added to the advantage in the 61st minute, converting a one-on-one breakaway after a through ball from Andrija Antunovic to extend the Battlin' Bears' lead to 3-1.

Warner Pacific cut its deficit in half with a goal in the 67th minute. With just 40 seconds remaining in regulation, the Knights' Ethan Zavala broke free from the defense and converted the game-tying goal, sending the match into overtime.

Over the two overtime periods, the Battlin' Bears outshot the Knights 3-1. However, Rocky managed just one shot on goal, which was saved, sending the match to a penalty kick shootout to determine who advanced to the CCC Semifinals.

Warner Pacific goalkeeper Owen Purvis stood out in the shootout, denying Rocky's first two attempts. While Antunovic converted his attempt in the third round, the Battlin' Bears' fourth attempt hit the crossbar, advancing Warner Pacific to the semifinal round.

Notable Statistics

Rocky outshot the Knights 19-10 overall in the match, placing nine shots on goal compared to Warner Pacific's four. Herbert led all players with five shots, including three on target.

Up Next

Rocky (13-0-4) will now focus its attention on the upcoming NAIA National Tournament. First-Round matches will be played on Thursday, Nov. 19.
