Five Battlin’ Bear Golfers Earn Postseason Award Recognition; Coach Bailey Named Men’s and Women’s Coach of the Year

BILLINGS, Mont.- Kristjan Burkelca and Grace Metcalf were named Players of the Year, Sam Norman earned Rookie of the Year, five Battlin' Bears were named All-Conference honorees, and Coach Nathan Bailey was named the Men's and Women's Coach of the Year. 

Kristjan Burkelca, a redshirt junior from Domzale, Slovenia, was named the Frontier Conference Men's Player of the Year, as well as an All-Conference honoree. Burkelca won his second consecutive Frontier Conference individual title on Wednesday with a score of four-under-par 212 (76, 65, 71). Ranked inside the top 50 in the NAIA this season, he earned two victories on the season and four top-five finishes. 

Grace Metcalf, a senior from Arlington, Washington, was named the Frontier Conference Women's Player of the Year along with All-Conference honors. Ranked 37th in the NAIA this season, Metcalf defended her individual title at the Frontier Conference Championships this week following a third-round comeback effort. The senior totaled three tournament victories this season and six top-three finishes overall, including shooting four-under-par in her tournament win at the Dickinson State Invitational in September. 

Sam Norman, a freshman from Laurel, Montana, earned Rookie of the Year honors in the conference, as well as All-Conference recognition. Norman finished runner-up at the Frontier Conference Championships with a score of one-under-par 215 (69, 76, 70), and finished six strokes ahead of any non-Rocky golfer. The Laurel High School product finished under par in two different tournaments, including a season-best eight-under-par at the Dickinson State meet in September. 

Aidan McDonagh, a senior from Melbourne, Australia,  was named an All-Conference honoree. A decorated senior for the Battlin' Bears earned one tournament win this season, four top-ten finishes on the season, and four tournaments where he finished under-par overall, including a season-best seven-under-par at the Beartooth Invitational in September. 

Tyla Potgieter, a senior from Gauteng, South Africa, was named an All-Conference honoree. Potgieter earned three top-five finishes this season, including a fourth-place finish at the Frontier Conference Championships this week. She shot a season-best two-over-par at the Dickinson State Invitational in September to finish runner-up and is ranked inside the top 150 in the NAIA this season. 

Head Coach Nathan Bailey was named both the Men's and Women's Golf Pepsi Coach of the Year. This season, Coach Bailey has continued to lead the Rocky Golf programs to success, having both teams ranked in the top 25 and leading both programs to Frontier Conference Championships and NAIA National Championship appearances. On the women's side, the Battlin' Bears won their fifth straight conference title, while the men won their seventh team title since 2018.
