Ellis was an all-state basketball, football, and cross country performer in 3 years at Doniphan West High School in Highland, Kansas. In 2012, he played in the KBCA All-Star game at Washburn University, which is the All-Star game to the best players in Kansas. After graduating high school, he stayed local to play at Highland Community College where he was a starter his sophomore season. He then transferred to Wartburg College in Waverly, IA to play his final 2 years of college basketball. Both his junior and senior season, Wartburg made it to the Conference Championship. 

Ellis started his coaching career after he finished playing basketball. In 2016, he stayed at Wartburg College and was an Assistant Coach for the Men's Basketball Team. In the 2016-2017 season, Wartburg College won the conference championship and made it to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Division III National Tournament. Ellis then took the Graduate Women's Assistant Job at Grand View University in Des Moines, IA. In his 1st year of coaching at Grand View University in 2017-18, they made it to the NAIA National Tournament that was hosted in Billings, Mont. In his 2nd year at Grand View, he was granted the position as JV Head Coach where he led the team to a 12-5 record. After graduating and getting his Masters, he stayed one more year as a Varsity Assistant in which he helped lead Grand View to a First Ever Ranking in the Top 25. In the 2021-22 season, he took an Assistant Coaching job at Seward County Community College in Liberal, KS. Seward County made it to the Final 4 in the Region IX tournament.

Ellis joins Rocky in August 2022, he is married to Samantha Ellis and they are proud parents to Waverly Ellis.
