Bellevue, Neb. - Rocky Mountain College had a successful first day at the GoSarpy.com Labor Day Classic securing two wins in as many games.
The Battlin' Bears seemingly cannot be stopped. Their victories today add to an already impressive win streak that now totals eight wins in a row.
Rocky started off the day with an impressive win against No. 2 ranked Dordt. The Defender's maintained a close match against the Battlin' Bears, but even the 2017 National Championship Runner-Up was unable to top Rocky.
The Battlin' Bears took the first two sets, but the Defenders were able to climb back with wins in the third and fourth sets. Only a 15-11 win in the fifth set allowed the Battlin' Bears to secure their eighth victory.
Dordt managed to snap Rocky's streak of consecutive games without losing a single set. Rocky's streak of sweeps ended with six games in a row.
Rocky's victory was owed in part to
Natalie Hilderman who orchestrated 41 assists.
Daniella Russell earned 19 kills while
Olivia L'Ami added 18 of her own.
Hailey Copinga and
Annie Cooke both had 18 digs.
Rocky finished the night with a 3-1 victory over Northwestern (Iowa).
The Battlin' Bears won the first set against the Eagles, but stumbled briefly in the second with a 25-19 loss. Rocky quickly bounced back and finished the match by winning the last two sets and securing their ninth victory.
Rocky's
Hailey Copinga had 16 kills. Oliva L'Ami and
Daniella Russell both added 15 of their own.
Natalie Hilderman contributed 45 assists and 16 digs.
Rocky will play again tomorrow as they face off against Morningside at 2 p.m. and finish with tournament host Bellevue at 6 p.m.
