Battlin' Bears lose in final minute to the Bulldogs

DILLON, Mont. –  Rocky Mountain College's football team was unable to hold off the Bulldogs in a 21-24 heart breaker.

The Battlin' Bears, having beaten regional rival Dickinson State last week, were looking to take down Frontier Conference foe, Montana Western.

The Bulldogs scored a field goal and a defensive touchdown off a Jacob Bakken interception in the second quarter.

The Battlin' Bears rallied with a pair of Bakken to Max Gray touchdowns in the third quarter. Montana Western responded with quarterback Jon Jund rushing in for a touchdown.

Rocky down by three in the fourth quarter, 14-17, needed a comeback. Bakken delivered and found Gray, for the third time of the game, for 32 yards and a touchdown.

Victory seeming assured, Rocky's defense was unable to hold the tide. 32 seconds left in the game, Western's Jund scored off a rush. Rocky could only watch as the game slipped through their fingers.

The Battlin' Bears were handed their second loss of the season. Their record now sits at 2-2. The Battlin' Bears were unable to capitalize as they had 432 yards of total offense compared to Western's 334 yards. They led Western in both passing and rushing yards.

Bakken threw for 291 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. The quarterback led the Battlin' Bears in rushing with 67 yards.

Max Gray led the way in receiving with 132 yards and three touchdowns.

Rocky's JJ Taele and Keenan Fagan both hauled in interceptions.

Billy Williams led the Battlin' Bears in tackles with 11. Chase Bertelsen, Dallas Mack, and Keenan Fagan had 9 each.

The Battlin' Bears will travel next week to Caldwell, Idaho. to take on College of Idaho on Sept. 22. That action will start at 1 p.m.
