Game Recap: Football |

Battlin' Bears ground Blue Hawks with 21-10 Victory

BILLINGS, Mont. –  The Battlin' Bears secured a 21-10 victory over the No. 13 ranked Blue Hawks during the annual Hall of Fame Game.

Rocky (2-1, 1-1 Frontier), coming off a 51-7 victory over MSU-Northern last week, was looking for a much needed win over regional rival, Dickinson State (2-1). The last time these two teams met, the Blue Hawks beat the Battlin' Bears 43-28 in the 2017 season opener.

Quarterback Jacob Bakken orchestrated the Battlin' Bears offensive attack this afternoon. He threw for 249 yards and two touchdowns while adding an additional 54 yards on the ground.

The Blue Hawks scored the first points of the game with a field goal in the second quarter. Shortly afterwards, Rocky got on the board as Bakken hit Lucas Overton for the first touchdown of the day.

Dickinson State's Hayden Gibson would respond with a touchdown pass of his own to Randy Ivey. However, Bakken answered right back as Max Gray hauled in a pass over a defender in the corner of the end zone.

Sam Sparks would round out the Battlin' Bears efforts, scoring what would be the last points of the game, with a rushing touchdown in the third quarter.

Any thought of a Blue Hawks' comeback was put to rest with a fourth quarter interception by Rocky's Keenan Fagan.

The Battlin' Bears had 439 yards of total offense

Mason Melby contributed 87 yards to Rocky's ground attack. Sam Sparks added an additional 55.

Taylor Schwartz led Rocky in receiving with 83 yards.

Dickinson was unable to take advantage of several opportunities to get back into the game. The Battlin' Bears were able to overcome three interceptions, one fumble, and a blocked field goal to grab their second victory of the season.

Rocky Mountain College welcomed the 2018 inductees into the Clara Klindt Athletic Hall of Fame during a halftime ceremony. The inductees in attendance and current Hall Fame members present were led onto the field by the Rocky cheer team for a round of applause in honor of their accomplishments.

The Battlin' Bears will travel next week to Dillon, Mont. to take on Montana Western on Sept. 15. That action will start at 1:00 p.m.
