BILLINGS, Mont. – No. 23 ranked Rocky Mountain College defeated Lewis-Clark State College in four sets Friday evening. The Battlin' Bears went 25-20, 25-17, 23-25, and 25-13 to advance their record to 11-5 overall and 3-0 in the Frontier Conference.
Tied 12-12 in the first set, Rocky outscored Lewis-Clark 13-5 to end the match at 25-20.
The Battlin' Bears jumped to a 7-3 early lead in the second set, but had to fend off the Warriors who rallied to a tie at 9-9. A 9-2 streak late in the second set gave Rocky a 25-17 set win.
Rocky lost the third set to the Warriors in 23-25. Aiming for a three set sweep, the Battlin' Bears pulled within a point of the Warriors, but fell to a late kill by Lewis-Clark's Tori Edwards.
Rocky quickly rebounded from the third set. Tied 1-1 at the beginning, Rocky jumped ahead of Lewis-Clark as the Warriors never led in a 25-13 Rocky win to finish the match.
The Battlin' Bears' scoring effort was led by the pair of
Monique Rodriguez and
Miranda Gallagher who each scored 10 kills.
Morgan Allen and
Daniella Russell both provided an additional eight kills apiece.
Natalie Hilderman had 38 assists and 15 digs while
Ayla Embry had 18 digs.
Lewis-Clark's Brooke Kaawa had 15 kills and 13 defensive digs while Edwards provided 14 kills for the Warriors. Josilyn Remick had 36 assists.
The Battlin' Bears will face No. 18 ranked Montana Tech tomorrow at 7 p.m. in the Fortin Education Center.
