BILLINGS, Mont. – Three overtime periods defined a wild night for the first men's basketball game on Rocky Mountain College's newly renovated First Interstate Bank Court. No. 9 Carroll College narrowly managed to avoid an upset with a 101-97 win over Rocky Mountain College in triple overtime on Wednesday.
The game remained close through regulation with neither team gaining more than a 10 point lead. Rocky seemed destined to defeat the No. 9 ranked team in the nation with a 72-69 lead as the clock dwindled down. Yet Carroll's Dane Warp hit the game-tying three in the final seconds of play to send the game into overtime at 72-72.
The Battlin' Bears picked up momentum in the first overtime period and once again like they could potentially pull off the upset. However, Carroll's Jonny Hillman sank a game-tying three pointer late to send the game into double overtime on a score of 81-81.
In the second overtime period, Carroll's Shamrock Campbell sank a shot from beyond the arc in the final 30 seconds to give the Saints a 91-88 point lead, but Rocky's
Darius Henderson forced the third overtime period with a three pointer of his own moments later.
In the third and final overtime period, the Saints jumped ahead, outscoring the Battlin' Bears 10-6, to claim the 101-97 victory.
The Battlin' Bears finished the night shooting 40 percent from the field and 43.8 percent from beyond the arc. In comparison, Carroll landed 42.7 percent from the floor and hit 29.6 percent from deep. On the glass, Carroll outrebounded Rocky 53-41.
Rocky's
Darius Henderson posted a career-high 33 points in addition to a team-high nine rebounds and four assists. Senior
Grant Wallace also posted his career-high with 23 points while pulling in seven rebounds.
Brandon The Boy sank 4-of-6 during a 14-point performance while
Sam Vining had 10 points and six rebounds.
Carroll College's Dane Warp posted 33-points on the other end of the court while also pulling in a team-high 10 rebounds. Jovan Sljivancanin posted an impressive 20 points and a team-high 21 rebounds. Dennis Flowers III had 14 points while Shamrock Campbell and Ifeanyi Okeke each scored 12.
Rocky will next play Montana Western on the road in Dillon, Mont., on Saturday.
