No.24 Rocky Football Falls to No. 23 Montana Tech 20-17

BILLINGS, Mont., Oct 29, 2022- No. 24 ranked Battlin' Bears football fell to No. 23 Montana Tech 20-17 on Herb Klindt Field.

The Battlin' Bears got on the board first, after Isaiah Schlegal tipped and picked a pass from Jet Campbell, George Tribble Jr. found Trae Henry from 60 yards out to give Rocky a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. Rocky stuffed Tech on a 4th and 2 try on the proceeding possession, giving the ball back to the offense leading to another George Tribble Jr. to Trae Henry score, this time from 32 yards out.

Out came original starter Jet Campbell and in came Blake Thelen for Montana Tech. Thelen found tight end Logan Kennedy for a 21 yard score with three minutes left in the half, cutting Rocky's lead down to 14-7 going into halftime.

Montana Tech's offense found success in the run game in the second half and leaned on it heavily. Blake Counts ran for 26 yards on Tech's second possession in the third quarter, then two plays later punched it in from a yard out to tie the ballgame up at 14-14. Rocky's offense would respond, as George Tribble Jr. and the Battlin' Bears offense put together a long drive, resulting in a 28 yard Austin Drake field goal to give the Battlin' Bears the lead again 17-14 with just a second left in the third quarter.

More of the same from Montana Tech to start the fourth quarter, as Blake Counts and Blake Thelen combine to bring Tech's offense all the way down the field, ending in a 30 yard field goal to tie the ball game up again.

Tech put together another long, sustained drive behind Counts and reserve back Kaleb Winterburn to set kicker Ryan Lowry up for a 32 yard field goal to put the Orediggers up 20-17.

The Battlin' Bears had two opportunities to tie the game late in the fourth quarter, but were unable to pull within field goal range and fall at home 20-17.

George Tribble Jr. threw for 206 yards and rushed for 117 yards on the day, Trae Henry totaled seven receptions for 139 yards and two touchdowns, and Jack Cline finished with 10 total tackles on the day to lead the Battlin' Bears.

Blake Thelen threw for 164 yards and a touchdown in relief for Montana Tech, Blake Counts rushed for 153 yards and a score, and Logan Kennedy had four receptions for 71 yards and a touchdown. Angel Sanchez III had two interceptions on the day for the Orediggers.
