Rocky Football Defeated by Montana Western 44-21 on Senior Day

BILLINGS, Mont., Nov. 12, 2022- The Battlin' Bears finish their season 6-4 after falling to Montana Western 44-21 in the final game of the regular season.

Neither team could find an offensive rhythm in the first quarter, going scoreless through the first 15 minutes. Western's Reese Neville found the endzone on the first possession of the second quarter to give Montana Western the lead 7-0. The Battlin' Bears responded with a 13 play drive, allowing freshman Trent Nobach to get into the flow of the game utilizing a heavy screen game. Nobach capitalized the drive with a two yard keeper for the first touchdown of his Rocky career to tie things up at 7-7.

Rocky's defense has proved to be among the conference's best all season, but uncharacteristically allowed three big plays for touchdowns in this game, the first being a 70 yard passing touchdown from Western's Jon Jund to Isaiah Thomas to give Western a 14-7 lead. Western got the ball back for the final possession of the first half and a costly pass interference call set Western's John Mears up for a season long 46 yard field goal, giving the Bulldogs a 17-7 lead going into halftime.

Western's next big play came on their second possession of the third quarter, as Jon Jund found Trey Mounts for a 49 yard touchdown pass to give Western a 24-7 lead. After Western got the ball back on an interception by Latrell McCutcheon, Brail Lipford made a big play to keep Rocky in the game, stripping a Western receiver as Jack Cline jumped on the loose ball to give Rocky possession in Bulldog territory going into the fourth quarter.

A couple of hard-nosed rushes by Zaire Wilcox set up an eight yard catch and run by Joseph Dwyer from Trent Nobach to cut Western's lead to 24-14. Rocky seemed to have taken momentum back, getting Western down to a 3rd and 1 with the chance to get the offense back on the field early in the fourth quarter, but Western's Reese Neville bounced outside of the pile on 3rd and 1 and raced down the sideline for a 66 yard rushing touchdown to give Western a 31-14 lead.

Rocky's offense didn't blink, as Trent Nobach found Joseph Dwyer for a 46 yard strike, eventually leading to a Zaire Wilcox touchdown from three yards out on the next possession, bringing the score to 31-21.

The big plays by Western continued to plague Rocky's chances to dig back into the game, as Jon Jund found Elijah Benedick for 41 yards on a 3rd and 3, followed by a 27 yard touchdown pass on the following play to Isaiah Thomas to give Western a 37-21 lead. With the game already in hand, Montana Western found the end zone one more time on a five yard touchdown pass from Jund to Mounts to give the Bulldogs a 44-21 victory.

Montana Western was led by Jon Jund's 21/32 passing for 337 yards and four touchdowns, adding 42 yards rushing as well. Reese Neville rushed 25 times for 182 yards and two touchdowns. Trey Mounts caught 10 passes for 132 yards and Isaiah Thomas had four catches for 114 yards and two touchdowns. Reese Artz grabbed two sacks and Latrell McCutcheon grabbed an interception on the defensive side.

Freshman Trent Nobach turned in a good performance in his second start for the Battlin' Bears and his first real opportunity to show off his throwing ability, after the weather dampened the air game in the win over Northern. Nobach was 34/53 for 334 yards and a touchdown, adding a rushing touchdown as well. Zaire Wilcox was Rocky's leading rusher, running for 74 yards on 18 attempts with a touchdown, while adding seven receptions for 33 yards. Andrew Simon finished with nine receptions for 98 yards, Joseph Dwyer grabbed six receptions for 85 yards and a touchdown, and Trae Henry tallied seven receptions for 76 yards. Jack Cline, Nolan McCafferty, and Wes Moeai all tallied nine tackles each on the day, while Kaysan Barnett, Wyatt Brusven, and Brail Lipford had two pass breakups.

The Battlin' Bears finish the 2022 season 6-4.
