Timely Defense Propels Rocky Women’s Basketball to a 48-46 Victory Over University of Providence

BILLINGS, Mont. Dec. 3, 2022- Rocky Women's Basketball moves to 2-0 in conference play after defeating University of Providence 48-46 at home Saturday afternoon.

A game defined by defensive effort, no baskets came easy for either team throughout. Rocky's defense held the Argos to single digit points in the second and third quarters, giving the Battlin' Bears a 10 point lead going into the fourth quarter. Providence made their run in the fourth quarter however, starting the quarter on a 13-2 run to give them a one point advantage with only 2:35 remaining in the game.

Mackenzie Dethman became the difference in the end, as she responded to Providence taking the lead with a three pointer to give Rocky the lead right back, then drew a foul on the following possession. Dethmen put in one of two free throws to give Rocky a one point lead with just over a minute left.

Providence held the ball down one with the shot clock off and the game winding down, but Gracee Lekvold poked the ball free from the Argos and sprinted down the floor to whittle the clock down to a second, before being fouled and eventually sealing the game.

The Battlin' Bears were led by 17 points, three assists, and three rebounds from Kloie Thatcher, Mackenzie Dethman tallied 16 points, seven rebounds, and three three pointers, and Dominique Stephens added six points, seven rebounds, and two blocks.

Providence was led by 22 points, eight rebounds, three steals, and two blocks from Maddy Dixon, while Reed Hazard tallied eight points and seven rebounds.

The Battlin' Bears (6-3, 2-0 conf.) will take on MSUB in an exhibition match in Alterowitz Gym Thursday night, tipping off at 7:00pm.
