Strong Second Half Pushes Rocky Men’s Basketball to a 70-60 Victory Over Dickinson State

The Battlin' Bears men gain momentum with their third consecutive victory headed into Frontier Conference play next week.

BILLINGS, Mont.- The Battlin' Bears picked up their third consecutive victory after taking down Dickinson State 70-60 at home to cap off the Hampton Inn Green and Gold Classic.

The Blue Hawks held onto the lead for the majority of the first half, led by Kose Egbule's nine points and two steals, as Dickinson State took a narrow 33-32 lead into the halftime break.

The Battlin' Bears leaned on Jesse Owens' and Kael Robinson's shot creation in the second half, as the duo led a 15-3 run early in the second half that secured a lead that the Battlin' Bears will hold onto through the final buzzer.

While it wasn't a good night from the three point arc (6-21, 28.6%) for a team that shoots 38.7 % from downtown this season, the Battlin' Bears were nearly perfect from the free throw line (14-15). Couple excellent free throw shooting with the Battlin' Bears winning the turnover margin, only giving the ball up eight times while forcing 19 Blue Hawk turnovers, Rocky found a way to secure a strong home victory that avenged their 74-65 loss to Dickinson State earlier this season.

"I thought both teams were playing very hard in the first half and both teams struggled to get in a rhythm offensively," Coach Bill Dreikosen said. "We ended up in some foul trouble but were able to get out of the first half with a one point deficit thanks to great defensive intensity that forced 14 turnovers in the first half alone. We still struggled to find rhythm in our half court offense in the second half, but our defensive intensity was there throughout and I was really proud of how our guys took care of the ball and knocked down their free throws."

Rocky was led by 15 points, three rebounds, and two steals from Jesse Owens, 14 points, seven rebounds, and four steals from Kael Robinson, and eight points, three assists, a block and two steals from Cade Tyson off the bench.

The Blue Hawks were led by a game high 18 points and 10 rebounds from John Evans and 13 points and seven rebounds from Kose Egbule.

The Battlin' Bears (9-5) will travel to Havre to take on MSU-Northern next Thursday, January 5th as Rocky re-enters Frontier Conference play.
