Rocky Football Takes Down No. 21 Montana Tech in Butte Saturday

BILLINGS, Mont., Sept. 17, 2022- The Battlin' Bears looked energized after their bye week, taking down #21 Montana Tech in Butte 28-20.

The story of the game would be turnover differential, as the Battlin' Bears would force 5 turnovers, while only giving one away.

Rocky would get on the board on the first drive with a 17 yard field goal by Austin Drake to give themselves a lead they would not give back. The following possession, Prince Johnson forced a fumble that he would take himself back to the end zone to give Rocky an early 9-0 lead after Tech blocked the PAT attempt.

Rocky's lone turnover came on the following possession on a fumbled punt. Rocky's defense did not waver however and was able to hold Tech to just a field goal on a drive that started at Rocky's 10 yard line.

Rocky would be the next to strike, as Nathan Dick found Zaire Wilcox for a 17 yard touchdown to give the Battlin' Bears a 15-3 lead.

Tech's Jet Campbell would respond the following drive with a 1 yard rushing touchdown to bring Tech back to a 15-10 deficit. Tech would get a field goal before halftime to bring the halftime score to 15-12.

The third quarter belonged to Rocky Defense and Nathan Dick, as Dick would rush in a 1 yard touchdown to capitalize off of a Tech fumble recovered by Wyatt Brusven to open the third quarter. Wes Moeai would force a fumble that was recovered by Nolan McCafferty, which led to another Nathan Dick rushing touchdown, extending Rocky's lead to 28-13.

Tech would get back on the board with a Campbell passing touchdown to Blake Counts, cutting the Rocky lead to eight with two minutes remaining. Rocky would go three-and-out on their next possession, giving Tech a chance to tie with 1:19 remaining.

A couple of rushes by Jet Campbell would set Tech up within striking distance, but an interception by Jack Cline at the Rocky 4-yard line would seal the victory for the Battlin' Bears, winning 28-20.

"I loved our energy today from start to finish," Coach Chris Stutzriem said. "It all started with how we practiced this week. A great game plan and adjustments by our coaches. Our defense swarmed to the ball, created turnovers, and made their quarterback uncomfortable all day and our offense was consistent all day and really moved the ball well. We have to clean some things up but I'm really proud of the Battlin' Bears."

Nathan Dick finished the day throwing 17-26 for 149 yards and a touchdown, adding 67 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Zaire Wilcox rushed for 77 yards on 20 attempts, adding four catches for 40 yards and a touchdown reception. Shamar Whestone and Jack Cline each grabbed an interception, and Nolan McCafferty added eight tackles and a fumble recovery.

Jet Campbell finished the day throwing 19-37 for 207 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Campbell was also Tech's leading rusher, running for 94 yards and a touchdown. Blake Counts also rushed for 85 yards and had a receiving touchdown.

The Battlin' Bears (2-1) will host MSU-Northern next weekend for Homecoming, with kickoff starting at 1:00pm.
