Thatcher’s Electric First Quarter Paces Rocky Women’s Basketball Over No. 11 Carroll College 58-51

Upset victory for the Battlin' Bears secures first place in the Frontier Conference standings.

BILLINGS, Mont.. Jan. 7, 2022- Rocky Women's Basketball moves to 4-0 in Frontier Conference play as they take down No. 11 ranked Carroll College 58-51 in the Fortin Education Center Saturday afternoon.

The first quarter belonged to Kloie Thatcher, as she scored Rocky's first 12 points on her way to scoring 14 points with four three pointers in the first quarter alone that pushed the Battlin' Bears to a 19-11 lead. The Battlin' Bears built their lead in the second quarter, holding the Fighting Saints to only 21 points in the first half.

The third quarter was sloppy for both sides offensively with a combined nine turnovers. Only six points scored by the Battlin' Bears in the quarter gave the Saints the run they needed, bringing back what was once a 19 point deficit down to two points at the end of the third quarter.

The Battlin' Bears stayed tough however, beginning the fourth quarter with a quick layup by Mackenzie Dethman, followed by an immediate steal and layup from Kloie Thatcher to give Rocky a six point lead. Dominique Stephens, playing through foul trouble, dropped in a couple of clutch layups on the way to the Battlin' Bears extending their lead in the fourth quarter and eventually securing the upset victory over Carroll.

The Battlin' Bears were led by 22 points, five rebounds, four assists, two blocks and two steals from Kloie Thatcher and seven points, four rebounds and three assists from Ky Buell. Gracee Lekvold also pulled in a team high six rebounds as well as dishing four assists and swiping two steals.

The Saints were led by 13 points and 10 rebounds from Jamie Pickens, along with 10 points and eight rebounds by Sienna Swannack.

The Battlin' Bears (12-4, 4-0 conf.) heads to Dillon next Thursday, January 12th to take on No. 18 Montana Western.
