Kael Robinson’s Career High 29 Points Propels Rocky to 90-79 Victory to Open Their 2023-24 Season

GREAT FALLS, Mont.- Four Battlin' Bears scored in double figures, led by a career high 29 from Kael Robinson to lead Rocky over University of Jamestown 90-79 on Friday afternoon.

The Battlin' Bears saw their advantage come at the free throw line in the first half, getting to the line 14 times and converting 12 of their chances. Kael Robinson scored 16 in the first half, going 5-6 from the line, while newcomer A.J. Wilson scored 12 in his first 16 minutes of play in a Battlin' Bear uniform, going 5-5 from the charity stripe as well. Their free throw shooting was covered up by the Battlin' Bears cold 2-10 start from three point range in the first half, coupled with seven first half turnovers to lead to a 40-36 Jimmies lead going into the break.

Jamestown looked like they may break away midway through the second half, as Covy Kelly hit a three pointer to give the Jimmies a 13 point lead. Elliott Brooks snuck back in transition, immediately answering Kelly's three with one of his own, which sparked a 13-2 run for the Battlin' Bears, bringing the deficit down to two points with 6:45 remaining in the game.

Jamestown finally stopped the bleeding, getting a layup and two straight defensive stops, but the Battlin' Bears found fire again, going on a 10-0 run over the next four minutes of play to put Rocky up by six in the final three minutes.

Just like the first half, the Battlin' Bears were efficient at getting to the free throw line and thus converting those opportunities into points, as Rocky shot 13-17 in the second half, including 5-6 in the final two minutes to put away the University of Jamestown 90-79 in Great Falls.

"It was a tough opening game, Jamestown is a very good team," Head Coach Bill Dreikosen said. "I was proud of how our guys kept fighting. They came back down from 13 with 10 minutes to go and ended up winning by 11. They showed some resilience to find a way to gut it out versus a good team and I'm happy to see that so early in the season."

The Battlin' Bears shot 48.4% (30-62) from the field and 29.4% (5-17) from three in the winning effort. They shot 31 free throws, hitting 25 of them (80.6%). Their 31 attempts were the most in a single game since 2018, when they shot 33 against Benedictine University-Mesa, where they also converted 25 of those shots.

Kael Robinson led the way for Rocky, along with his career high 29 points, he also pulled down a team high nine rebounds, dished three assists, and had two steals. Maxim Stephens finished with 18 points, eight rebounds, and was 8-8 on his free throws, Jesse Owens finished with 17 points and a game high four assists, and A.J. Wilson finished with 17 points, two steals, and four rebounds, three of which were offensive boards.

The Battlin' Bears (1-0) will stay in Great Falls to take on Corban University at 10:00am (MT).
