Rocky Volleyball Defeats Montana Western in Four Sets

DILLON, Mont.- A complete team effort saw the Battlin' Bears take down the Bulldogs in four sets on Friday evening.

The Battlin' Bears took complete control of the first set, as they hit .300 as a team to take a 25-16 first set victory.

The Bulldogs took the second set as they replicated Rocky's first set success hitting, finishing the second set hitting .318 to run away with the second set 25-19.

The third set was back and forth throughout, showcasing two of the Frontier's top teams this season. After a Danyel martin kill gave the Bulldogs a 21-20 lead, Rhianon Nez spiked back to back kills, then tallied a block to force a Montana Western timeout as Rocky led 24-21. Montana Western would get two points back after the timeout, but a Bulldog attack error gave Rocky a tightly contested third set win, 25-23.

Montana Western jumped out to an early lead in the fourth set and led throughout most of the set. Rhiannon Nez again sparked a Battlin' Bear run, as she spiked two kills to rally Rocky to a 17-17 tie. The Battlin' Bears capitalized on multiple Montana Western attack errors as both teams bounced back and forth. Makenna Bushman tallied her seventh kill of the night to force a Bulldog timeout as Rocky led 22-21. Bushman would commit an attack error on the next rally, but would put down another kill to give Rocky a 23-22 lead. Kaitlyn Wood and Bella Bryan would combine on a block to put Rocky within a point from victory. The Bulldogs battled back, scoring two consecutive points to tie the match at 24-24, but Bella Bryan would spike her 14th kill of the night. Bryan's kill would be followed by a Bulldog attack error, giving Rocky the 26-24 fourth set win to take home their third consecutive conference win.

Bella Bryan finished the evening with 14 kills, seven digs, and three blocks. Kaitlyn Wood (.391%) and Rhiannon Nez (.611%) each added 11 kills as well. Wood and Paige Sawyer put down three blocks each, with Nez adding four of her own. Blythe Sealey tallied 48 assists and 10 digs. Brooke Ark led the Battlin' Bears with 23 digs, while senior Hayley Bretz added a career high 19 digs in the winning effort.

The Battlin' Bears (18-9) sit in a three-way tie for first place in the Frontier Conference standings at 5-2 in conference play. The Rocky women have an opportunity to jump #10 Montana Tech in the standings, as they host them Saturday evening at 6:00pm in the Fortin Education Center to celebrate Senior Night.
