Preview

The Battlin' Bears will compete in the Sam Milanovic Classic for the third consecutive season. They are 3-1 over the past two seasons in the tournament hosted by Dickinson State, with their lone loss being to host Dickinson State a season ago.

The Battlin' Bears begin their weekend against Valley City State University on Friday afternoon. The Vikings have begun their season 5-3, most recently defeating Viterbo University 76-73 in La Crosse. Senior guard Cleveland Bedgood has stepped into a starting role this season and has thrived so far, leading the Vikings with 20.2 points, 3.0 assists, and 0.5 blocks per game this season, while junior forward Hunter Lyman begins the season averaging a double-double with 10.5 points and 10.4 rebounds per game. Valley City State provides a unique challenge to opposing offenses, setting their defense up in a 1-3-1 zone, forcing around 14 turnovers per game, while limiting their turnovers to 12 per game. The Battlin' Bears will see Valley City State for the first time since 2016, when they defeated the Vikings 78-59.

The Rocky men will conclude the weekend against host school Dickinson State University. The Blue Hawks enter the weekend after an impressive showing at the Montana Tech Tip-Off Classic as they defeated #6 Montana Tech and the University of Providence in back-to-back games. 2022 First Team All-Conference junior guard John Evans was named the North Star Athletic Association Men's Basketball Player of the Week last week after totaling 40 points on 15-of-24 shooting from the field and 6-of-12 from three-point range in Dickinson's two victories. Junior guard Kose Egbule has led the Blue Hawks so far this season, averaging 13.2 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 1.8 steals per game to begin the season. The Battlin' Bears split their matchups with Dickinson State last season, as the Battlin' Bears won on their home court last season behind a 14-point, seven-rebound, four-steal performance from Kael Robinson to avenge their lost to the Blue Hawks in the Sam Milanovic Classic.
