Rocky Women’s Basketball Falls to Boise State 67-46 in Tuesday’s Exhibition

BOISE, Idaho.- The Battlin' Bears outscored the Broncos in the second and fourth quarters, but ultimately couldn't overcome a third-quarter run by Boise State, falling 67-46 in their final exhibition game of the season.

The Battlin' Bears got off to a solid start against their NCAA DI opponent, as a layup by Dominique Stephens gave Rocky an 8-7 lead with 3:44 remaining in the first period. The Broncos responded by battling for offensive rebounds on multiple possessions, sparking a 15-0 run. Angie Cavanaugh broke up the run with a three-pointer, but Boise State went into the second quarter with a 24-11 lead.

The Rocky women responded with a run of their own in the second quarter. After Tatum Thompson began the second quarter with a three-pointer for the Broncos, the Battlin' Bears put together an 11-0 run, fueled by forcing turnovers and crashing the offensive glass as they cut their deficit to just five. Both teams struggled from the floor to close out the first half, as a pair of made free throws from Gracee Lekvold and a layup from Boise State's Alyssa Christensen were the lone points by either side in the final three minutes of the second quarter, as Boise State led 35-26 going into halftime.

The third quarter belonged to Boise State, which ultimately was the deciding factor in Tuesday's exhibition, as the Broncos outscored the Battlin' Bears 19-5 behind a high-tempo attack. The Rocky women made a late run in the fourth quarter as they outscored Boise State in the final 10 minutes, but their deficit was too much to overcome. After the Battlin' Bears forced 12 first-half turnovers, Boise State only turned the ball over three times in the final 20 minutes of play.

Dominique Stephens led the way for the Battlin' Bears with 17 points, 12 rebounds, and two steals on the day. Ky Oliver was the other player in double figures, scoring 14 points with six rebounds and two steals of her own.

The Battlin' Bears were held to just 29.5% (18-of-61) shooting from the field and 18.8% (three-of-16) from three. Defensively, the Battlin' Bears limited Boise State, who ranks eighth in the NCAA this season in three-point shooting percentage, to just 21.7% (five-of-23). The Broncos found their edge in points in the paint with 38, while also getting 37 of their points from the bench.

The Rocky women (7-0) will return to action on Tuesday, December 19th in the first of three games at the 2023 Cactus Classic, where they will take on UHSP, Benedictine-Mesa, and #3 ranked Indiana Wesleyan.
