Rocky Men’s Basketball Defeats Montana Western 77-73 Saturday Afternoon

The Battlin' Bears shoot over 50% from the field, 45% from three, and 82% from the free throw line in a winning effort in Dillon.

DILLON, Mont.- Clutch free throw shooting down the stretch helped the Battlin' Bears hold off the Bulldogs 77-73 in Dillon on Saturday evening.

The Battlin' Bears got off to a hot start, jumping out to a 21-8 lead after a three pointer by Beau Santistevan around the 10 minute mark. The final 10 minutes of the first half swung back in favor of the Bulldogs, as Montana Western dialed up pressure and forced five turnovers, were able to get to the free throw line eight times, and cut the Rocky lead to three heading into halftime.

The Bulldogs got out to a fast start in the second half, hitting their first five shots from the field to jump out to an eight point lead in the first five minutes of the second half. Jesse Owens took the game into his own hands, as Owens scored eight of Rocky's 13 points on a 13-2 run in response to swing the game back into Rocky's favor, leading 60-52 with five minutes remaining.

Another Owens layup with under a minute remaining gave the Battlin' Bears an eight point advantage. Montana Western refused to back down, hitting two deep three pointers to pull the game within two points with only 17 seconds remaining. Nick Hart was able to ice the game for the Battlin' Bears, hitting all six free throw attempts in the final 13 seconds to give Rocky a four point victory.

"Guys came out ready tonight and showed a lot of fight." Coach Bill Dreikosen said. "I am proud of how hard they played. Western has been playing well, winning their last three games, so we knew we needed to come and play hard. Now everyone is 0-0 and we'll get ourselves ready for the Frontier Conference Tournament."

The Battlin' Bears were led by Jesse Owens, who tied his season and career high with 24 points, along with five assists and two steals. Maxim Stephens scored 28 points with a career high three made three pointers to pair with six rebounds. Beau Santistevan also added 11 points and five rebounds.

The Bulldogs were led by 19 points from Jamal Stephenson, who made 14 of his 16 free throw attempts. Jok Jok added 15 points and three made three pointers.

The Battlin' Bears (14-13, 6-9 conf.) will enter the Frontier Conference Tournament as the fifth seed.
